My friend asked me this question and i think its a good question,
Since i use 2 the same cards for crossfire i cant tell,

But he asks if he puts in a for instance 7750 with a 7850, What would happen to the performance,
Since the 7750 is a slower card with a less bitt interface.
My rig: AMD FX-8350 @ 5.1 Ghz Liquid Cooled / HD7950 3 GB x2/ 16 GB Ram 1866 Mhz / 3 TB HDD / 258 GB SSD / 3x 24 Inch Monitor LG Eyefinity. | Internet speeds: 50 Mb/s Download and 10 Mb/s Upload

He cannot. Only cards with the same chip can be crossfired, f. e. a 7750 and a 7770.
Spoiler:
If he does two different cards in CF, make the "first" card the most powerful one in case something cannot utilize both GPUs.

Now that is something that I always wondered.

For instance the cards have the same chips but one is slower what will happen?

Basically the same things that would happen with two same cards, but the performance increase and micro-stuttering are slightly different.

HD 7850s and HD 7870s, like in the chart I linked.

Like he said, it has to be from the same family.

Ex. a 7800 card can ONLY crossfire with another 7800 card. Same with 6900 series, 5800 series, and so on.
