They seem a little annoying to make, requiring semi rare ingredients, and the effects aren't that great and of course temporary. It seems unlikely that you'll be able to even put the potion you need at the moment into your inventory in time to get any benefit from it. Am I missing something here, are there any particular good uses for potions?

Fire resistance... A great way to build around and in lava...
health potions... A way to heal hearts in a quick pinch in the midst of battle...
The quick potion... A way to travel even faster around the place without having to sprint often, although if you sprint during the duration you will go even faster...
Potion of harm(the splash version).. good to use when you have a mob machine, to reduce the mobs health for your quick annihilation.by sword or fists.
That is all I can think of off hand...

Potion of regen 2 - awkward potion + ghast tear + glowstone dust - great for going berserk against a cluster of mobs or needing health immediately.

Fire Resistance is amazing for swimming through lava, strength potions for mob spawners, and splash potion in general to through at mobs. I also love throughing a slowness potion at my friends.
Just ask if you need help/have a question!

yes, potions are definitely worth learning and using, they can help a great deal, like fire resistant in the nether

Keep in mind, the potion of harming will heal any un-dead monsters. Someone pointed that out for me on another thread and it does in fact heal skeletons and zombies.
But yes they are extremely useful. I take the time to sit there and brew loads of potions. With a looting III sword you collect materials like no-bodies business.
Two of the most useful to me are Regen II and Potion of Swiftness. Regen, you get 22 or 33 seconds of health regen and speed potion is pretty much self explanatory. Nothing like running around everywhere at the pace of sonic the hedgehog.

I always take one or two splash potions of fire resistance when I go caving or to the Nether and if I'm traveling a long distance I will use a potion of swiftness.
