keys maybe, but nothing more complex.

Make it so you can set up how the lock works:

Require skeleton key - means you need a generic key that can be made, works on all locks set to this.
Require unique key - means you will have to craft a unique key, with a unique design you can put into it (key rims, etc.) the design should be limited to promote fairness and make it so thieves won't know what kind.
The combination should have at least 3 choices of 2 kinds, meaning 2 kinds of keys, and 3 things that can be changed to a value of 1s or 0s (short or long edges). There can be 12 possible outcomes then. 3x2 for rims. 2 for key types.
3(x2) x2
To use a key on a item, you equip and right click.
Note that keys aren't stackable, so a thief wanting to steal would have to use up 13 slots (1 for each outcome).

You can also get at thieves, by putting a skeleton key locked chest in the middle of somewhere, and a unique key inside of it. This key then leads to another chest, and you can add small items in there to attract thieves to go on a wild goose chase.

key -> chest = key -> chest = key -> chest = garbage or trap.

But... couldn't you just destroy the chest and get on with your life? Don't say the chests are indestructible, because then they could just spam chests everywhere. D:

while this suggesiton is mroe compact, it would be easy for any thief to pre-create all twelve keys and waltz through your locks.

also, what stops thieves form simply breaking a block? if the block is indestructible people will start building using locks like adminium.

ok... i realize this is bumping an old thread, but this is an amazing idea, having smp without this would be a living hell
you have to have a way to make a locked chest, or a locked room, have a padlock on a door, he should also have stronger blocks that are as hard to break as diamond, or a lil stronger, so you can make very hard to grief houses
i give it a  :D

Also bumping old thread, but what if it took a while to break it and then it keeps its contents inside until lock picked

Or when you lay down the box a pop up ask a combination. To open you have to put the passowrd back.
What about a light bulb? Redstone dust + glowstone dust + glass bottle. Activable with signal.
