There should be name tags for your dog. And, you should be able to bring up a GUI to make your own dog collar. Then, you can have your own personalized dogs. And that way you can tell more dogs apart than the amount of dyes there are. And maybe you have to have those dyes in your inventory in order to paint with those colors.

You can dye the dogs collars now, right click on them while holding a dye and it changes the color, this is all that you really need to tell the dogs apart, and I am sure this is as far as Mojang is going to go.

EDIT: Noticed you mentioned dyes, but still, that is all you really need.

I support 100%. I love to name my wolves, but most times there's many, I don't know who is who.

Wolves (Not Dogs) don't deserve names as they are easily killed, almost useless, and were terribly made. I don't support.
Time to get back to the Classic times. A cake, with a saw inside of it.

Support. I find it hard to distinguish them apart (in servers, or if I have multiple) even with the new colored collars +1

I personally think you should be able to craft a collar, then name it with an anvil.

I can see where your argument originates from, the tamed wolves are far from perfection, though calling them worthless is an overstatement. They are not "easily killed", since they at full health has jsut as many hearts as the player him- or herself. If your dogs die when you have them help you out in battle you are obviously doing it wrong. perhaps try feeding them when their health is down so they can regenerate perhaps? XD
Maybe not have them attack a mob all by themselves? As long as you let them heal up between battles they're excellent! and battle isn't the only thing they are good for, many players tame wolves just like any pet simulator or do it just for company.

There is currently only one thing that speaks against tamed animals in minecraft in general, and that's the notorious glitch that makes them teleport to you at any given time, no matter whether they sit down or are several miles away from you, this bug must be fixed anyways.

Other than that there is no reason for them not to "deserve" naming as it is a feature that many people would like to have, not as a "rewarding" thing that they only deserve if they don't die when you send them out in combat, its for playes who wants to have a more personal pet-simulator in minecraft, it has nothing to do with whether you, topguy fail to realize their potentials or not, it is for all those others that actaully like the tamed wolves in minecraft.

personal opinions based on bad gaming experiences aside. enderdragon_puncher, your suggestion is simple, yet complex as a whole, it adds more variety by utilizing old fetures in new perspectives and it will be an excellent addition to vanilla for these said qualities, I support this.

That was a lie, dogs are useful for killing mobs and they have full health.

Will be 100% support. I like it.

Yeah, but I'd like there to be more colors so that I can tell them apart without having a ton of areas for them to be.

This is pointless, seeing as Wolves don't need to be distinguished other than on SMP servers. Even then, your dogs often follow you, rather than complete strangers. There's also already a dye function.

No support.

Same with me, I have a chart of things that my dogs do to get points on them. If they get 100 points, I either kill them or go on a suicide mission to try to kill zombie pigmen, Ghasts, blazes, and such.

It's just an idea, and some people like to name their dogs. And it would also make minecraft feel more 'homely'

Thank you FallaciousFoxtrot I totally agree, I've always felt Minecraft to be desolate so I didn't play often. But when they brought in wolves and the ability to tame them, I felt like my minecraft world was complete.

Fero (my first tamed wolf) approves your post
