So I was updating my Minecraft to the new snapshot & I was getting some achievments that were strangely uncompleted even though I had completed them a while back. However, that's beside the point. I was getting "Dueling Snipers" & I was enchanting a bow with Power & Punch when I noticed a new enchantment book which read: Thorns. I enchanted it to a diamond sword & tried to see if there was any difference in slaying power or style. I didn't notice any difference. I would really like it if someone could inform me what type of weapon or protection (armor) it is made for & what it is supposed to do.

It has a chance to deal damage to something that's attacking you. The higher the tier, the higher chances of it happening.

The Thorns enchantment isn't all that useful if you ask me. Who's going to run up to mobs to damage them while you're getting beaten by them? Maybe for PVP, but if you get that close the person would probably just beat you away with their sword.

I often find zombies creeping up behind me while I am trying to craft something during the early stages of survival, so I guess it would just give you a higher chance of defeating them quickly or, even, once you have upgraded it to a higher tier, kill the mob without you having to bother with moving. :)

Does the Thorns enchantment provide knockback?

It's almost useless against Zombies since Zombies bugged and can't deal damage while being attacked.

Useless against creepers.

I really only see it useful against Spiders and Skeletons, even then, it doesn't do much damage.

If it stacks with Protection, it won't be a bad secondary effect you could get.  But if you had to choose this or Prot, you probably would want prot.

You could consider it as more of an added bonus to getting attacked and not an actual strength that you would plan on using as a tactic. It is better than unenchanted armor and even defense armor, but Im not sure by how much.

Heres the thing , From my calculations having a thorns enchant would be like roughly getting in 2 extra hits with a diamond sword on an enemy.( This is assuming both sides in the fight are wearing full sets of diamond armor and are using diamond swords). This is assuming that thorns has a 50% chance of dealing 1 heart of damage. It'll give you a upper hand in a fight , not to mention with enchant books getting all the enchantments you want on an item is easier than ever. Just slap a Thorns(insert max level here) onto your Protection 4 armor.

One Question though, what happens if you have thorns on multiple pieces of armor? I haven't been able to check. the snapshot out yet.
Your a such a great friend that if we were both in a falling plane and there was only one parachute... I would feel really bad and think of you often.

It just makes sure that if an enemy manages to hit you (and you have thorn on your armor) that the enemy also suffers some damage. Seems like a good thing.

About your question,
I don't think it stack...
