Hmm, so the key to getting more items is, mobs dying faster = more room for more mobs to spawn.
Genius!
If that's the case, can't you make the floors smaller?
Possibly, but it's doubtful at this point it would make a difference, since as it stands mobs are 1 block from falling off a ledge, and 2 blocks from falling down a chute no matter where they spawn. The only way to speed this trap up would probably be to incorporate lots and lots of cactus.
edit I'm not denying the possibility of another trap designed differently being faster than this one, I'm just saying I think I've juiced just about every ounce out of this design without cactus.
Mystere, I've made a mob grinder which seems to be getting a similar rate of drops as yours (seems) and i'd like to test it. Although I have no idea how you go about it. Do you start the timer as soon as you come off easy? or do you let it warm up first?
Ill upload it in a little bit, want to test it first incase its a massive fail. But I'd like it to be as fair a test as i can get it. I'd really appreciate your help.
Btw ive used sinstrites (or was it yours?) bright room, and borrowed some of the same concepts, mainly small spawn areas and lots of grinders. Other than that, the layout is massively different, and much easier to expand. Also it can be built in less space sort of, kinda, youll see what i mean when i upload.
You let it warm up first. If it gets a similar number of drops, you should be able to let it run for about 4 minutes without filling your inventory completely.
And it's Sinstrite's bright room, his all the way.
Glad i tested it before I posted, because it really isnt getting as many drops as yours if im honest.
But I believe im onto something, it has potential, and you seem to be the optimiser! Can I send you the world save? It does get a nice amount of drops (much more than my chunk 0 mob tower), and its easy to replicate and expand (especially in mcedit).
by all means.

Nice. Will try to make myself one :smile.gif:
Please don't. Please check out my 10k an hour trap in my signature. It's like at least 100 times easier to build and like 60 times smaller.
Inspired me to make my own fast-killing trap. It's currently 21*21, from sky to bedrock, with a single killing floor and a droprate of about 17500 items/hour.
Now I'm gonna try and expand it
i see that u r killing trap is a bit risky, yes it does kill fast but burns alot of items along with it. correct me if iam wrong please because i wanna make this in smp and it wont have the same spawn rate so i cant risk having it burn alot of items.
Thought you might wanna see my trap. It's built with an incline towards spectacle more than space efficiency but it's still kicking out about 30K an hour, highest was 33K. Spawn floors are my own design based off taroun's research and the grinders are my own variation on the compact lava/cactus grinder of which I have no idea who to credit.

Hey mystere9, sorry to reply on your week old thread but i have some issues and questions that I think you have answers and tips... I'm planning in making a "general mobtrap effectiveness tips" thread, since i cannot find any that puts together all that is known about what works and what doesnt, and your design is one of the most simple and efficient out there, and one that has actual chance of being constructed in real conditions.... :smile.gif:
I have made a design based on some considerations regarding spawn area and grinder area, but before I post it, here's a doubt... I have checked your mob trap in both minecraft and mcedit and I'd like you to please explain to me how do you place those two signs back to back in the center of two water/lava sources, and how do you make the water/lava flow towards them. I've searched everywhere here and in google/youtube and couldnt find anything but a way to make only one sign in the wall with another stacked in the middle like:
[] []
[] [] [] []
Yours is like:
[] []
[] [] [] []
(It's actually a 4x4 space if i'm not mistaken, but i added the air so you could understand the flow problem and sign placements)
And when i place the water source in the space, if its only one source, the flow will be directed towards the corner (so nothing useful), and if two water sources, they will cancel and stagnate (so no flow of loot downwards).
I need to know how and if you can do it in regular minecraft at all, because the whole concept IMO is pointless if we cannot make these little details work without other tools/edits so that it becomes practical for people to build in their regular saves, or SMP. (no offenses intended)
Anyways, I'll post here the design as soon as you reply to this post... so that you can say what you think of it, and if it has chance of being a real improvement to your mobtrap.

Hi,
I'm not sure what your layouts above are based on. If you're talking about the kill zones those looked like this in the post on page one in this thread:
Kill floor(super efficient design):

Layer 1:
Basically it looks like this from the side (I believe):

The great thing about this is it requires a whopping 50 signs for every 4000 or so blocks of spawning space, and it's modular, so you can make it as big as you want. F yeah!

Why do you use signs at all? Ladders should have the same effect and are cheaper.
Mobs can climb ladders and ladders also have some collision, which can cause problems with mob flow and also items can pop out and land on top of ladders never to be retreived.
Kudos!

Like anime? Try Visual Novels.

hmm...how big are your chutes?
Like anime? Try Visual Novels.
but it looks good! lets hope it works
I've been doing the same thing for the last week or two. If it gets the drops I'm hoping for I'll definitely post a tutorial for everyone.

I don't know, and I'm not quite sure how I could test it. It doesn't seem to detract too terribly from the drop rate though.

I would be very interested in seeing a save of this.

I'm quite the shady customer.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
Yeah, that's exactly right.
For those interested, I have a new design available. It's pretty tight, and relies on gravity/lava. This is the tower:
