It's that time again - Snapshot time!  What goodies lie in this week's test client?  Mojang had this to say about the 12w49a Snapshot:

Quote

“What’s this? This doesn’t sound like a redstone update at all!”, you say. “Indeed,” we say. Thing is, we* suddenly decided we wanted to make sure that you have fireworks for New Year’s Eve, so we’re working in several parallel branches of the code now. One is for the 1.5 “Redstone Update,” and one is now for a 1.4.6 patch update. This update will be out before Christmas, and 1.5 will wait until January (or possibly February).

*Send complaints to jeb_

Changelog:
  • Added fireworks (sound effects will come soon)
  • Added enchanted books for enchanting items
  • Netherbrick slabs?!
  • Plenty of bugs addressed!

Wait a minute - enchanting books?!  What the heck are those?  As it turns out, Dinnerbone had some pretty awesome plans for the anvil when it first came out, and they included, among other things, the inclusion of sweet enchantment books!

I wish mojang showed the recipes, if any, on the snapshot page so we don't have to look everywhere lol

I never thought I'd see fireworks in Minecraft. This looks like a great update, woohoo.
Oh, hi... I'm, uh, Fluttershy.
Yay.

Fireworks FTW! I'm guessing dye + TNT or something. This will be great for adventure maps. Fireworks explode once you win.
Also, I love the idea for enchanted books. That way you can finally customize your enchantments. Of course, it will cost you a bit to use the Anvil, but I think it's a good balance.

so what exactly are the bugs they fixed, and what bugs are still in? like is the flickering minecarts still there and is the fps still lower compared to 1.4.2. Im still in 1.4.2 because of those 2 particular bugs in general

I played around, and you make fireworks with paper and gunpowder.  The recipe is shapeless

I hate the new stuff that isn't adding anything to the gameplay value i.e. Bats and Fireworks....

Has anyone figured out what the Firework Star does? I'm messing with it right now. It could be possible that it doesn't do anything until next update.

Took a few minutes to figure out how to put them together... but wow, beautiful! Can't seem to figure out how to rig them to fire in sequence though.

Putting the firework star in the firework recipe slightly changes the behaviour of the firework, I think we should try finding it's crafting recipe, it could be a dynamic one like the rocket recipe.

What ive found out it, if you place 1 paper and 1 gunpower in a crafting table, then add 1 firework star, you will get an rocket
with "Flight Duration: 1" and it does goes higher then a normal rocket.
But beside that, I havent found out anything yet.

No special effects/colours yet.

Edit!

When i made a normal rocket (1 paper + 1 gunpower) and place it in the center of an crafting table,
then place a yellow dye  above it, and then 1 gunpower below the rocket, you will get
Firework Star with a yellow color in it, also it says "Small Ball" and 'Yellow'.

To make multiple colors just add in multiple dyes in making a star. To make the colors fade just add a dye to the finished star. Still working on size and shape.

Edit. Found how to increase duration too. Add more gunpowder when making the finished rocket.

Also, you can combine colors, like with armor. This is looking awesome!
