Does this work for everyone? I tried it out and was curious if it was "perfect". What I mean is, if it's day time does the chicken always stay on the pressure plate, or does it sometimes wander off still? It seemed like if I got to close to it that I "distracted" the chicken and changed it's behavior. Maybe a picture would help just so I know I did it right, but It does seem to work most of the time...
I tried this and could not get it to work. I made several pens and varied the size and the amount of chickens and couldn't get a reliable result. Its sad really, I was looking forward to using this.

only needs 1 chicken if I understand correctly...O_o it is not a farm, but a sensor.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.

Tried it. Didnt work. The chicken ran around randomly no matter the circumstances. :/ Besides, how the hell do you put a chicken in a coop the wrong way?!? Lol
Diagram
I used varied lengths, widths, and number of chickens. All with random outcomes.
Well the stupid diagram didnt come out right, but whatever. I really wanted this to work.
It sounds like the device is 4 blocks tall (counting the floor and ceiling), and 3 blocks by 4 blocks horizontally.
Here's a top down view

I haven't built this yet, but you might be able to compact layer 1 & 2 together (making the chamber be 1 block tall). Presumably, you'd place the glass block last, after breaking eggs into the chamber until a chicken spawned.
My diagram adds where to put redstone, so you can read the signal off the floorplate (should work, floor plate passes signal to the block underneath it, redstone picks up the signal from the side of that block).
Presumably, you'd run a redstone wire to the bowels of your underground facility to activate a redstone torch so you'd know if it was night time or not.
All of this assumes that chickens reliably move into the sun and do not wander. Considering the adjacent square has a torch, it's not like the chicken is wanting for light.
This is genius, I can use the pressure plate not only to see day/ night detector, but to power my redstone creations during the day. Chickens are so usful as test subjects.
Sorry about issues guys, I have been busy with Skyrim; Dragonborn DLC so I kinda forgot bout pics. Will get those tomorrow before rpg opens up...
Make sure it is in a wide open space, otherwise, the light doesn't seem to like the chicken. Make sure you use a torch, not glowstone/jack o lantern/lava. They are too bright. Also, only use 1 chicken.
There is a better design,
have a 2x2x2 room filled with pressure plates. No roof, put fences/slabs on top of the wall (to get rid of spiders) And have a small 1x2x2 (with a roof) room on the side, have a torch in there, the chicken will go there at night, and at day he will go out. Also, the reason it is 1x2x2 is because the the torchs light can sometimes seek out onto the pressure plates allowing the chicken to go out there, so a small light source will be fine, as long as it is not too far. but very close,
Pics come tomorrow right before rpg starts...
I will be using this as a feature for the rpg, to enable day/night in the underground city too
Religion, has actually convinced people, that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of the day, and the invisible man has a special list. Of 10 things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do ANY of these ten things he has a special place, full of fire, and smoke, and burning, and torture, and will send you there to suffer and choke and scream for all of eternity... But he still loves you.

I think it's past when you said you'd post a picture...I'm not trying to like super rush you, but you said you would post by now...

Will it work while you're a fair distance away? On the PC version, passive mobs will not move when you're >33 meters away.

See, this seems like it would require redstone......
Er, for your circuit... Yes... But the day/night detector... No....
Wasn't home all day guys, and when I was home at night I started to create a tutorial and it didn't give me the option to post pics. We'll see how it works out tomorrow. Sorry!

Or you could post a diagram like I did, showing the construction. It only took me a few minutes.
Which incidentally, the machine I digrammed, based on your explanation, did not work.
the chicken wanders back and forth all day and night.
When are you going to post the picture? (trying not to sound impatient)
I'm trying man, when I do go and take the time to post the pic, it doesn't give me the option to take a screenshot. (stupid bug)

you could try using a phone or something external.... just saying I know the quality won't be as good but the design sounds simple enough to not need a lot of quality in the pic... I'm also anxious because I tried with the "description/explanation" you gave in the first post and I can't seem to get it working the chicken seems to stay under the torch day and night...
Let’s say you have a castle and you want the gates to close automatically at night to keep the monsters out. A day night detector makes this possible.
And you don't have to do any thing.

Sorry, forgot (blame skyrim ) and I didn't see this thread till now, will work on it as soon as I can (tomorrow after school hopefully)
This is where split screen comes in handy, otherwise, no.

Enough said
But good idea, might use it but try with a stone pressure plate!

Just diagram it like I did.
By the diagram I drew (based on your description), the actual machine does not work.
So providing a correct, functioning diagram would be useful, otherwise, this myth is busted.
