I believe that one of the Minecraft workers mentioned physical fish, and this got me thinking.
+ + = Spear
Combat
It would be a single tier weapon used to throw at fish, or occasionally other mobs. It would do slightly more damage than arrows, have less durability, and less range. It would have a durability of 60 (a wooden sword, the preferred amount), or 132 (a stone sword.)
A normal attack, or thrust would consist of a left click, and it will deal damage similar to that of an iron/stone sword (5-6 damage/2.5-3 hearts). You would also have slightly expanded range, or an extended reach, say one block bonus or so, for melee. The damage and range is balanced by its low durability. The spear's melee attack could possibly apply a knockback effect due to its reach. The reach could also cause a slight delay in its attack cool down.
A right click would result in throwing the spear. In this state, it would do more damage, and it would have the range slightly longer than a splash potion. When used in this state, it would do about 9-10 damage (about five hearts), or slightly more, say, 10-11 damage. When used like this however, it takes up two durability points, to balance the range, and high damage.
Retrieving the spear could happen in a variety of ways:
1. The spear could drop as a weapon when it hits a target, (except for fish.) This could be counterproductive however, as zombies could then potentially pick it up.
2. It would have the ability to pierce through all mobs, and would stick in the ground like an arrow when thrown. It would slow down/loose its momentum for each mob it flies through, (except for fish), to balance this retrieval method.
It would be difficult to fish with, but it would provide the challenge and variety that some of us believe that we need. If used properly, it could potentially catch multiple fish at a time. The spear could strike faster than other weapons as well when thrown, to make it more practical/efficient for catching fish.
This makes it an excellent tool that would be fun to use.
Some of the Minecraft team also discussed a spike block, or something pointy that would come out of dispensers as well. I believe that this would fit the bill. This would make an adequate retractable spike trap to the game.
*Jousting
Now with the addition of Horses, spears could be used as javelins and/or lances for a jousting sport.
Fish possibilities
Some people also discussed new fish types, which had me thinking carps, or large neutral fish mobs.
These have been hinted at, and are a potential for 1.6.
If normal fish where implemented, then they would likely just spawn in rivers, shorelines, or small bodies of water. Or even, to keep it simple, the first few top layers of any group of water. This is because it is a rather hands-on activity, and this way, the tedious work of having to fetch your spears at the bottoms of lakes and oceans.
ALSO, if this has already been posted on another thread, rather than giving me a hard time, please just send me a link. My search resulted with no relevant threads. Thank you.
Great idea, but I thought it could be good at fishing. In fact, it should be able to catch multiple fish per spear throw.
Yeah. It would be better if it where more efficient. That way it isn't a waste of materials, and it would require more skill to use at it's potential. I'll add it to the thread.
I love the idea of spear fishing. Though, all of those fish being in the water would probably lag someones computer, causing them to freak out on Mojang about it. I agree on the idea of less range, being a spear, but less damage than an arrow? That doesn't seem right. It should have a lot more damage than an arrow. I agree with the durability being low, but not too low. Y' know? I'd like to use it a few good times and get a lot of fish rather than having to keep making spears over and over again just to get a couple of fish.

All in all, I support your idea to the fullest.
I don't think that the fish would create lag any more than all the current mobs do, but you never know right?
As for the damage, a bow usually takes three shots to kill your average mob. So maybe the spear could be balanced by doing less damage than a bow in melee, and more damage in ranged. A potential side affect of the range could be that it could use up more durability.
As for the durability, how does about as much as a wooden sword sound?
Sorry, I should have probably been more specific. But thanks for the initial support anyway, and for the feedback. It all helps y'know.

The durability of a wooden sword sounds good.
The fish could possibly create some lag, if they had custom animations. Swimming around and flapping their fins. Not sure if they WILL have custom animations, if fish are even added, but there should definitely be a toggle for animations.
I like your idea, perhaps because I had the same ( http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1740971-adding-fish-and-improving-fishing/ ), but, if you do not mind me putting words in your mouth, you seem to intend the spear more as a weapon than a fishing tool. Allow me, if you will, to create a scenario and pose questions which, I believe, expose some flaws in your idea that may need to be revisited:
Would the old rod-fishing mechanic be the same, even though there would be physical fish? Also, how could you fish in the ocean or a lake with this spear? Once you threw it, you would have to jump into the water to retrieve it, I assume, because it is not cheap enough to not do so. I likewise presume that the spear travels quickly through water, to prevent fishing from being too difficult, but that would mean that you would have to dive all the way to the bottom of the lake or ocean to pick up the spear again. After that, you have to get back in your boat or on land and do it all over again. That seems terribly time-wasting to me. Also, as you suggest that a spear would be a legitimate weapon, it could not be stackable; thus reducing the practicality of carrying multiple spears and collecting them from the water all at once. And if you should be fishing in any water of considerable depth, you would not be able to collect all the spears at once anyway (unless you threw them in the exact same place, which would not make any sense, as fish are moving targets). And one last thing: could you spear a fish by melee attack and not just throwing it?
Following all this, I do not know if I can agree with "[the spear is] an excellent tool that would be fun to use". However, this may very well be my biased opinion as a sort of "rival" in the fishing area of the suggestion forums of Minecraft Forums (ha ha). And maybe I just misinterpret your intentions for the spear. But perhaps you will see something in this, and the time I spent writing this was not for nought.

Dinnerbone was talking about adding physical fish mobs. So this would only take place if that was implemented.
Well, arrows tend to do more damage than a sword on average, so I didn't want it to be too overpowered in melee.
But either way right. Thanks.

Well, it has been hinted at, and considering that they stated there will be more mobs in 1.6, sounds like they will.
Thanks!
