I've been pretty happy with 1.4.5 overall but now I've run into a problem that is making part of 1.4.5's performance worse for me and a friend than prior versions.
We have a long nether tunnel that we use constantly in a Lan-Play world. In the last several versions of minecraft we've been able to run along it (East-West) without any noticeable slowdowns, it was nice and smooth.
But now with 1.4.5 (we never tested the world in any prior verions of 1.4.x) we keep hitting nasty lags over and over again. We'll be running along fine for a few seconds then wham wham wham... This also happens on these same computers when Lan mode is off and it is being played solo.
We have tried Multi-Core Optifine (Dual core systems) but if anything that actually makes the problem worse, no matter what settings we use.
So to recap; Same hardware and software + different versions of clean install minecraft but same settings = different Nether lag performance. (I have tested old copy of world with 1.3.2 again in parallel install and it is still smooth.)
Has anyone else noticed this difference and possibly got any advice? I'll have to check later and see if anyone has posted this to the official bug tracker.
(Dual Core, 3.33Ghz, 4GB Ram, Vista 32bit, MB video, Java 6 32bit) Not my copmputer, cannot change hardware or software.
[EDIT] We have already started using decorative blocks not available in 1.3.2 so I'm concerned about loading the current world with 1.3.2 again (corruption?) otherwise we would consider going back to it, even though we would hate to do so...
This broke shift-clicking for me and also if I ever press a mouse button while moving I stop. However it did fix the Nether lag .
Someone in an earlier thread mentioned that shift-clicking was broken when using 2.8.5 but that it worked in 2.8.4, so you might try that slightly earlier version of lwjgl. It's probably still recent enough that it fixes the nether lag.

Whoah! That is seriously good to know! Thanks for sharing that info.
I will update the OP and title to reflect this new info. Again, thanks!

I've tested both lwjgl 2.8.5 and 2.8.4 on a set of PC's I use and have not found any difference between them. I've not had any kind of [Shift-Click] bug yet with 2.8.5 that I've noticed. What kind of system was this [shift-click] bug found on?

[EDITx2]
Problem is solved.
I replaced the lwjgl (LightWeight Java Game Library) included in 1.4.5 with the newer stable version 'lwjgl 2.8.5' direct from it's website.
Not only did it solve the Nether lag problem but I'm getting better fps overall!
- Whichever version of lwjgl they included with 1.4.5 appears to be bugged, 1.3.2 didn't have this problem.
* Follow the directions on the Minecraft wiki to do this for yourself as well!
