What I'm unclear about is how the block is set to only accept the correct "key" item, or whether the OP intended that it would trigger on any item, not just a particular item.
The principle seems like a good idea especially if Adventure mode is fixed, but the idea still needs a lot more detail before I could support it.

(if anyone could create a GUI image for this, I would be grateful)

If that's still too vague for you, tell me.

I liked the idea then, I still like it now. It's fairly versatile, conceivably useful for many different functions... Sounds like a winner. I'm still wondering if it would be possible to make it function like a straight-up lock and key. It'd be neat if it could be made to only accept a certain altered item (say, a gold ingot that somebody had renamed on the anvil as "Key"); it'd be a lot easier to create locked doors in adventure maps.

Allow me to reword:
So, in other words, a wooden pressure plate which is restricted to certain items and has storage? (which can be half achieved if hungry chests get added)

Also, there are numerous mods for what I think this is. Easier to get the mod then to add in game is my suggestion.
