This may or may not have been suggested before, but here it is:Lighting is one of those things in minecraft that is relatively basic and one-toned.What if torches could be made coloured instead?

The current torches come in one colour (minus the redstone torch, since that powers things) which I believe could be changed.

Coloured Torches:

The torches could be crafted using a redstone torch and a dye of any colour. It would be a shapeless crafting recipe, similar to this:

This is just an example for a yellow coloured torch, however the difference between this and a normal torch would be that the colour in the yellow would be more intense, giving it a more lively effect. The brightness of the torch would still be exactly like that of a normal torch.

As for each colour, they would be vibrant and colourful, and great for things such as Adventure Maps, Builds and even as possible landmarks in the world.

If you like this idea then please +1 and tell me what you think of this idea Posted ImageIf you would like to support this idea, write it as a reply below and I will add you to the supports list

Also, if you are going to criticize, DONT just write "I don't like because it will make me lag".
That argument has no ground at this current time, seeing as the Minecraft Lighting Engine is being redone.
As far as you know, the capabilities of this new engine could well support something like this.

How bright would the torches be?
Do they function like redstone torches or normal torches?

This isn't descriptive enough.

Oh sorry, they would be the brightness of a regular torch, but colour-toned.
EDIT: Just fixed that on the thread

I like the idea of colored lighting, but it's not practical at all (For the coders of MC). It would require an extremely intensive addition to the lighting system. I don't like excessive lag for the sake of decoration so I don't support this idea.

I shall no longer ask myself if this or that is expedient, but only if it is right. Therefore, I will try to do what is right, and to speak what is true. -Cry, the Beloved Country

The lighting engine needs a revamp anyway, so this whole "I don't like excessive lag" thing could be fixed through the new engine.

Hi

Good idea, different colored lights would be a great addition to many maps.

P.S. You might also want to take a look at the colored glass thread by Galactic_Muffin. (If you haven't already)

This has been suggested before, and has a full compatibility with an existing thread.

The reason this idea hasn't been considered is that it would require a rewrite of the current lighting system.

Did you read the last part of my thread? Yes I know it would need a rewrite of the lighting system, except Mojang stated they would be working on one to remove the black areas. Read first please

Not to mention all the effort needed to make sure all the light colors blend properly.
Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.

Instead of colored torches, I think colored redstone torches would make more sense. That way you can turn them on and off for things like Christmas lights, dance floors, indicators, signaling, warnings, etc.....

This is not all about if it would cause lag or would be hard to code, it is about if the idea would be nice, practical or balanced. Anyway, the lighting system has already been changed to cause less lag and torches already emit a slightly yellow light in the game, then colored lighting seems possible.

About the idea itself, I like it, it would add more style to any building and adventure maps.
I would also like to add a little variation to the idea : coloring a regular torch to have a regular colored lighting, and coloring a redstone torch to have a low colored lighting and have more varieties of colors in redstone devices. Coloring a redstone torch and getting as much lighting as a regular torch whereas the redstone torch basically has a lower lighting doesn't make sense, as well as losing its redstone properties.

I reckon that suggestion is much better. Way more in detail, the ideas are a bit better, etc.
It's not the lighting engine that bothers me. It's the fact that it is impossible to keep the same brightness when adding colour to the lights. It's not possible.
