Here is a one wide sideways one, though the top/bottom is used. Also your vertical ones can be tiled if you just alternate them (just so you know).

I started experimenting with these and noticed a strange glitch. If you put redstone on blocks that the smart piston pushes, the redstone will stay in the same place and intact as blocks are pushed under it. I just thought it was cool and worth sharing(maybe there is a use for it).

Oh neat, you found one to go directly upwards!  I always just botched a sideways and upwards together for that.  Never considered using a transparent block.
Uh... I guess I should really link to my youtube account here.  I've got some neat cannons, fireworks, a goban and all sorts of other stuff if you want to check it out:  http://www.youtube.com/user/seiterarch

Indeed. That has been happening for a while. You, at one point, gold make SR-latches from that concept. Have a torch under glowstone with the redstone on top being swapped with the solid block. Basically it will power the redstone when it is a solid block but not when it is glowstone. You can similarly do it with torches on top of glass and solid blocks

That one was a bit tricky!
