I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.

Yes, I can confirm. In 1.4.4 if you use /enchant then the name of an enchantment and a value (Power 5, power 4, ect...\0 it will enchant that item.
Althoguh I think you have to be holding it.

I don't do snapshots. Partially because I'm lazy, partially because I'm cautious, partially because I'm patient.

I can also confirm it.
You need the enchantment ID as well, while missing from the Wiki's Data Values page, they are on the Enchanting page.
And the power is limited by enchantment , so no "Fortune XXX" :-(.
Eg. holding diamond pickaxe:

The problem is you can't enchant anything you want, only things that would normally have that enchantment.

I wish the command would let you enchant anything. I want to give someone a poisonous potato named "Lemon" with Fire Aspect II.
