It's not to the death. The only death that's certain is the marowak Team Rocket murdered.
There's Pokémon Tower(a big cemetery thing) and stuff too though.

Yep, cubone's mother. You fight it's ghost in Pokémon tower(which soon gets ripped up to build a radio station).
Cubone had to watch her be killed.
