MAJIKGUY'S MARVELOUS MOON MOD!!
This update contains no new features, but addresses the need for a config file and other compatibility tweaks. These should now work, along with many other minor bugfixes and tweaks.

HELLO!

INFORMATION:
This mod adds, as you most likely would guess, the possibility for the player to build a spaceship and fly to the moon! Right now, I will admit, the moon is a very barren place. There are no new mobs. There is only one new ore, and it is hard to reach and has no use. There are no caves under the surface.
There isn't much of anything.
Yet.
What the moon DOES have, however, is a completely unique building environment that you can only find in a zero-pressure environment.  Building on the moon is very different than on Minecraftia. Any building materials that are not strong enough to stand up to the dangers of a vacuum are simply unusable, and liquids are frozen solid instantaneously.
Sadly, the same physics apply to the human body, leading to a bit of exploding unless you are wearing a space-suit!

For now, the mod is mainly a way to test your building skills and to get the hang of the moon-physics system for when I add more to the mod later.

DETAILS:

PLEASE NOTE! The mod is complex, and this is just a quick overview, many things will not be covered. Also, the physics are not perfect, and there may be times where it does not want to cooperate.

Space-Suit: Must be worn while in the vacuum of space in order to prevent explosive decompression.

Air Scrubber: Used to create artificial atmospheric conditions similar to those on Minecraftia. To use it, place it in an airtight chamber and right-click it. If the scrub is successful, then the light will turn green and the scrubbed area will function almost identically to normal Minecraftia. CAREFUL! If the air-tight seal of the chamber is lost, then the room will decompress, destroying any fragile blocks that may have been placed as well as putting the player in danger.

Cockpit Block: Used only as the key block in the building of a space-ship. Once the ship has been built around it, right click the cockpit in order to be transferred between the moon and Minecraftia.

Framework Block: This is a block that is not in the screenshots because I have not had the time to make a nice one for it. Since the moon requires you to build out of stone, metal, or glass, I wanted to add another building option for the player. By putting iron ingots in a 2x2 grid, you will get 2 Iron Framework blocks. They operate exactly like Iron blocks, but they cost much less to make, opening up the potential for a more futuristic building style without taking a crazy amount of iron.

Moonstone: The basic block on the moon, it can be smelted to get an iron ingot. Since you needed so much iron to get to the moon, I figured that I would go ahead and be nice. If you are wondering why it does this, look up what happens when you microwave lunar dust. Pretty cool.

Star Blocks: They don't have a use YET, but they will once I start adding the interesting features.

INSTALLATION:
The only other install that the mod requires is the most recent Minecraft Forge.
The usual installation procedure works, and I recommend using Magic Launcher! It makes things a ton easier and gives easier access to the in-game logs.

KNOWN BUGS:
Currently, there are a few glitches I have not been able to iron out.
  • The Earth is no longer shown in the sky while on the moon. I am working on fixing this.
  • World gen MAY be very slow for some people. I am working on optimizing this, but for now just let me know if you have any problems.
These bugs are only the ones that I have been unable to work out on my own, I am sure there are more. If you are feeling generous, please send me your glitches so I can compile a complete list of problems to address.

THANKS:
I want to thank everyone involved in Minecraft Forge for the awesome work they do!

FUTURE PLANS:
THIS is the fun part.
  • Reworked world-gen, including vast undergound oceans and crystal formations
  • Many new materials, used for everything from laser-tools to teleporters
  • Dangerous moon-mobs
  • Much more!
The reason that these are still just plans is that I need to make sure the key systems of the mod work as planned before it is made more complicated.
For now, feel free to download the mod and have fun! Posted Image

Wow!
I have gotten way more requests for permission to do spotlights than I expected! I am sorry to say that I won't be able to put all of them onto the post as-is, I am going to have to put some of them into a spoiler.
I am trying to find a fair way to decide which videos get the exposure, and my current plan is to make it based on time. I'll just keep two of them out of the spoiler, and as new ones are submitted I'll cycle the oldest ones into the spoiler tag.
Thank you for your support!

Since the mod is so complex, if anyone wants to do any kind of spotlight, that would be AWESOME!

Brother this is just the mod I was searching for :D I'll record a spotlight that should be uploaded in about 9 hours or so :)

Just a quick little question if your still around... Do you need to craft the entire spaceship for the portal to activate?

Since there is currently a torch decompress bug, make a naturally spawning ore that can be crafted into a glowing block of sorts... It could be the Moon's acting equivalent to glowstone, but must be crafted instead of found. Caves with crystals in them would be cool to see too. (Not and ore block, an actual crystal-like block.)

Glad I could help! It is still a little rough around the edges, but I think you will like what you try. : )
And yes, you do need to build the entire spaceship for the portal to activate, it does a check when you click it.

My plan is to make a crystal that functions like the opposite of Glowstone. It only appears on the ground of deep caverns in the moon, but it grows slowly into crystal formations. You have to harvest shards from it, which are used to power all the fancy technology that will be on the moon, and it will function like a glowstone kind of thing on top of that. The only reason it isn't in now is because the world gen is a little broken, I need to rewrite it entirely for it to support something like this.

Are you sure the ship is built correctly?
The blocks used are Iron blocks, glowstone, and obsidian.
Really hoping there isn't already a weird glitch on other people's PCs. : /

By the way, I would recommend going to the moon once before, THEN recording you do it the second time.
I am finding that on the actual client, the whole "rarely falling into solid rock" thing is a bit more common than in the MCP test client. I am really sorry for the trouble, I'll be rewriting the worldgen from scratch in the next day or two, and that should solve the problem.
This is the last time I agree to let a friend do my world-gen code. Posted Image

That's strange, can you post the error report? I can't say much else without it.
Was there anything else strange going on when it happened?

I remember someone developing such a mod in the WIP section, ages ago!

Was it you?

In any case, this looks like it has potential!

But I don't think I like that moonstone!

Seriously, getting iron in Vanilla Minecraft isn't all that difficult, really!

Nope, this was never in the WIP section, but I did have an old post back in 1.7.3. Problems have been popping up that have kept me from updating since then, but I finally got it running again. There still is a moon mod in the WIP section, but it is completely different.

This is partially my fault, I need to redo the screenshots but I haven't had time. The block in the middle of the ship needs to be the nav-block, not the air scrubber. Those screenshots are from before I gave the nav-block it's own texture.
If you still can't get it, try watching the let's play, it helps to see it in action.

NOTICE!
I have released a hotfix, and it should have corrected most of the bugs, mainly the falling-into-the-ground glitch and the ice-crashing-the-game bug!
Please redownload the new version and enjoy!

This is really, really cool idea. The fact it is no longer just an idea and an actual, working mod, however alpha/buggy is incredible as hell. Will check back in a few days to try it out. Major diamonds for this though.
