I just loaded the snapshot to mess around with the anvil. So I threw one down, spawned a shovel and dug around until it was damaged. Assuming it would work like the Mcmmo anvil I right clicked and this menu pops up. Turns out, it's the same system they had before, now you just need an anvil to do it. Personally I hate the way you repair things and I never do. Mcmmo has a very good method of repairing tools and armor.

The only feature I like is the enchantment combining. That is a silver star for Mojang.
I just thought I would share my thoughts on the anvil and hopefully you have some opinions as well.

Although i have not tested it out, I'm extremely pleased they added this feature in! I love the way Mcmmo have set it out and wish this would of been similar but with mcmmo they have added the levelling system, so you get something out of the repair. As minecraft doesn't have this system, it would make no difference between repairing with 2 diamond and making a new diamond sword. The thing this adds is the enchant stacking feature which i'm personaly really exited for!, All them Unbreaking 3 picks are no waste any more! :D

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm assuming you need two items to repair a tool. They should keep the combining items to repair and add enchantments together, but also have the option to repair an item by itself using levels, as you do to add enchantments together.

It is craftable with 6 iron blocks and 1 iron ingot.

I was experimenting with the Anvil and got these test results.

Wood, Stone and Gold swords can be repaired for 1 level.
Iron swords are 2 levels to repair.  Diamond Swords are 17 levels.
It costs 15 levels to rename any item that cannot be stacked.  It costs 5 levels each to rename stackable items.
Potions cost 5 levels to rename.

I'm still experimenting though...

There appears to be some max level also. when I try to add to powerful enchantments that will cost 40 or more or try to rename an object causing the cost to go up 40 or more it won't let you. works with 32 haven't tested with anything in between 32 and 40. This is really annoying when trying to rename your powerful enchanted items, hopefully this is just a bug.

You can only rename up to 6 stackable items at once. and After the 18/19th item, it turns into a separate stack.

B = Iron block
I = Iron ingot

It's a bit expensive in my opinion...

Yea i think its a bit expensive to make. I think 7 iron ingots would be more acceptable.

i dont think its that much. besides seven ingots is way to low i can easily get that much in one vein. though i do think recipe is reasnable since your reapair enchanted diamond armor tools etc.

I'm going to point out right now that repairing via crafting does/did increase durability. The max efficiency was 2 45% tools would turn into a 100% tool(gain of 100%). But that's not really that worthwhile is it, even by crafting?

I think the recipe is fair, I don't like that it degrades though:(

I never knew you could repair items in your inventory until the anvil came out.

It's not really expensive much. By the time you have an enchantment table and stuff you'll have tons of iron laying around being usless, so it's not expensive at the point of it's most usfullness.

Can testify to that.  Anymore I am using iron tools 24/7 as soon as I find enough iron to start out.  It isn't too much longer after that I am combining my ingots into blocks to save storage space.  Knowing I can put those blocks to use now productively is a bonus.
