This is just throwing an idea out there, but consider the following;
A PVP-dedicated server type where each player that joins must align himself to a specific team; usually one of two, but possibly more if so desired. Each team spawns fairly far away from the other. This provides an environment to combine hardcore grief-or-be-griefed PVP and base building in a happy medium, hopefully. Monsters are also present to make caves and nights more dangerous.
How about a game mode where everyone starts out with a stack of a certain type and they can either choose to work together (The smarter choice I believe) or seek to live out their time as a hermit. This would make it so (hopefuly) people would work together to make bases against the others, while the raiders and loners are spread apart in tiny huts. For some reason I don't think this would work very well. :|
