Server Setup Guide

This is for beta 1.2_02 and windows only.

First of all, your going to need some server software of course.

Here a couple of links to some good software. I will do seperate guides for each (scroll down for guides once downloaded).

Server Software Download Links

:D Default Server Software http://db.tt/pZEro1C
:Pig: Hey0 http://solidfiles.com/d/e64c/download/
:GoldBar: Simple Server https://github.com/d... ... Server.zip
:goldore: Bukkit http://bamboo.lukegb... ... APSHOT.jar

Once you have downloaded your software put the files in a folder called 'server' or 'minecraft server' etc. The next step is to port forward.

Port Forwarding

Port forwarding is really difficult for some people. But it's a piece of cake with these programs:

:ironore: Simple Port Forwarding http://db.tt/aDNbee7
:Diamond: Port Forward Checker http://www.portforwa...PortChecker.exe

Once downloaded open Simple Port Forwarding and you should have this screen pop up:
Posted Image
Now choose your router from the list.
Posted Image
Once done it should automatically load your settings. Next click on the 'Getting Started Window' and then click 'Choose which ports you want to forward'. This window should pop up.
Posted Image
Now copy what i have put in to the boxes. The Ip address at the bottom should load automatically. Once this information is in press 'Add' .
Posted Image
Once added, you information should show up on the table shown. Now all you need to press is update router and it should do it all for you.
Posted Image

Now your ports should be forwarded, but just to check, open up 'Port Checker' and type 25565 into the box. If it says the port is open, the port has been forwarded. If not, please leave a comment below.

Server Software Setup

Default Server Software:

This is probably the easiest software to setup. All you need to do is:
:Iron: Download the file and extract to a blank folder.
:Iron: Now run the program and it should generate some files.
:DORE: Click on the server.properties and open with notepad or wordpad.
:Diamond: Make sure that the server port is 25565 and the server ip is whatever you forwarded your port to. For example in the pictures above, mine was 192.168.1.4 which is what i would type in.
:Diamond: Now you can change the settings to whatever you want, but we're not finished yet.

Hey0

This is slightly harder to setup but just follow these steps and you'll be done in no time!
:Diamond: Extract the files to a blank folder and run the 'server no_gui' program
:Diamond: It should then generate the files.
:Diamond: Now open server.properties with notepad or wordpad.
:Diamond: Make sure the server port is 25565, online mode is set to true and the server ip is the ip address you forwarded ( see last step of default server software).
:Diamond: Now you can change the settings to whatever you want, but we're not finished yet.

Simple Server

This is a bit more complicated but here are some easy steps:
:Diamond: Extract the files you downloaded into a blank folder.
:Diamond: Now download the minecraft_server.jar which is at the bottom of this page - http://www.minecraft.net/download.jsp.
:Diamond: Now run the 'launch' program, and it should generate some files.
:Diamond: Now open the server.properties with notepad or wordpad.
:Diamond: Make sure online mode is set to true, the port is 25565 and the server ip is the ip you forwarded earlier ( see the last step of default server software).
:Diamond: Now you can change the settings to whatever you want but we're not finished yet.

Bukkit

This is probably the hardest to set up! Anyway here are the steps:
:Diamond: Extract the file to a blank folder and download either 32 bit: http://db.tt/hWdRhht and put either one in the same folder as the jar.
:Diamond: Now run the Launcher and an error should pop up, close the program and open up server.properties with notepad or wordpad.
:Diamond: Make sure the server port is 25565, online mode is true and the server ip is the ip you forwarded earlier ( see the last step of default server software).
:Diamond: Now you can change the settings to whatever you want but we're not finished yet.

Nearly Finished

Now that you have followed the steps, and everything is set up. Run the launcher to start the server. Now go to http://www.whatsmyip.org/ and copy your ip. Open up minecraft, multiplayer, paste your ip and everything should work!

Static Ip

Now if you want a static IP address you need to follow these steps.
:Diamond: Type into your start menu or run 'cmd'.
:Diamond: Now type in ipconfig /all .
:Diamond: A whole list of numbers should pop up, just minimize the window for the time being.
:Diamond: Now go to control panel, network and internet, network and sharing centre.
:Diamond: On vista, press view status of local area connection and click properties or on xp, right click and click on properties.
:Diamond: Now , click IPv4 address and then properties.
:Diamond: Change from 'Obtain Ip address automatically' to 'Use the following Ip address'.
:Diamond: Now go back to cmd and look for IPv4 address and copy that to the first line, the subnet mask should be put in automatically.
:Diamond: Now look for default gateway and copy that to its line.
:Diamond: Now search for Dns server and alternate Dns server and copy both of those.
:Diamond: Now, just press ok until your out of properties.
:Diamond: You should now have a static ip.

Troubleshooting

Okay, if you've done all the steps and you still cant connect here are a few steps to fix that:

:Diamond: Instead of using your external ip try using 127.0.0.1 or the ip you forwarded.
:Diamond: Try setting up a DMZ, this can achieved by accessing your router with 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 etc. And looking around on that page for DMZ. I get to it by clicking on NAT and the DMZ but you might be different. Once there, make sure its enabled and put in the ip you forwarded.

Thank you for reading this tutorial, i hope it helped.
Any problems leave a post and will try yo help you.

So, if the ports are forwarded correctly, what would prevent my friend from connecting with my external IP?  I've shut down both my router's firewall and my windows firewall to no avail.  Driving me crazy  ;)

I'm using a Westell 7500 series, and I've already set up a static IP.  Setting the DMZ to the external IP doesn't help, either.  Ideas?

Thanks for the tutorial but quick question. my IP address doesn't work so I used the 127.0.0.1 one and it worked. Do I give the players the 127.0.0.1 one and they'll come in my server?

I'm having a problem. I made my static IP address on my comp and I tried to share it. My friends couldn't access my server at all with that IP, and my comp is dynamic with my public IP. Is there anyway to make my public IP static?
Let me introduce you to the Light....no, you're not gonna die yet..
