Notch Interview at PAX

During PAX, there was an hour-long panel with Mojang on the topic of Minecraft - its past, present, and future.  Meanwhile, Minecraft founder Markus "Notch" Persson was being interviewed on his views on Minecraft, a brief look at the trademark fedora, his still-in-development title "0x10c" - and some of the exciting directions it is going in - and much more!  Want to see the full interview?  Click the image above, or this link.

An example question asked of Markus by PAX Senior Editor, Ben Kuchera, was: at what point did Notch feel Minecraft had gone from "just a game" to a complete success story?

Notch said:

I think it started when Valve posted about it on the Team Fortress blog. Valve is probably the company I respect the most, if they ever release Episode 3. When they actually posted about it, and said the reason they did it was to get in contact with me, that’s when I went ‘Oh my god, people actually care about it.’ Which meant a lot.

The numbers were already kind of high, it was selling well, but it felt like it could end at any moment. But that’s when it got some industry cred, and felt like a turning point.

I think i'm on Notches side about ValvE (which by the way, is not "Valve" there official name is "ValvE", just saying ). I respect them as a company and I hope the only reason Episode 3 is taking so long is that there putting a lot of effort into it.

Mann Versus Machine was in development for years (I believe), so Valve probably wouldn't be working on Episode 3.

Hmm valve is actually probably the game company i respect the least. Maybe the give Notch some special attention but to me, an average gamer, i get terrible customer service and screwed out of my money a few times :S

I don't know anything about customer service with them, but when have they "screwed you out of your money"? I haven't tried out the Half Life series yet (I hear it's amazing though), but the games from them that I have tried have been of the highest quality.

This changes my whole approach to the game. I like to try to construct buildings that are functional (eg warehouses, hotels, markets, factories) and chests and beds allow me to do that. Definately excited.

I would like to see an infinite wolrd though. I have an idea that might work well for a mobile platform.

Minecraft PE loads a world that ends once you reach the perimiter of the... lets call it a chunk, a very large chunk. I suggest loading an infinite world in the same manner, one large chunk. Once the player reaches the perimiter of the loaded chunk an icon could appear giving the player the option to load the adjacent chunk. If the player chooses to do so the adjacent chunk would load and the current chunk would close. In order to avoid leaving the player in an unloaded space the player would also be relocated inside the newly loaded chunk in what would be the adjacent block or location.

So if the player were at coordinats x=0 and y = 25, imagine this on a 2 dimensional plane, and they were standing on the west perimiter of their loaded chunk 25 meters from the south perimiter. Then when they load the new chunk the player would be repositioned inside the new chunk at x= -1 and y= 25, or in other words the east perimiter of the new chunk 25 meters from the south perimiter. I would work sort of like a nether portal but without the portal. I think this would allow the game to perform the way it does now but give us an ifinite world.
