I've come up with an idea for vanilla Minecraft that I'd like a demonstration mod to be made.
Full details are here in the suggestion post, but it's basically a modification of the Pick Block command assigned to button 3 (middle mouse click) to improve it. It allows you to not only select the block your looking at with the cross hairs, but also select the tool you would use to destroy it properly. So looking at dirt (with no dirt your quick bar) and pressing "Pick Block/Tool" would select a shovel. If you are placing a bunch of wood but accidentally place too much, you can quickly select your axe, break down the mistake, and click again to keep placing more wood.
There are many nuances, some that I'm still working on developing. For example, having a weapon (either bow or sword) select when you click at a hostile mob, but not at some passive ones. See the suggestion for full details.
However, if you just want to do a basic demonstration mod (which I can understand since most mods are waiting on the new API). Here is what I need:
If you pick block click on dirt and with dirt currently selected in your quick bar, you select a shovel if it's in your quick bar
if you pick block click on cobble stone and you are currently selecting cobble stone in your quick bar, you select a pick if it's in your quick bar.
Clicking multiple times will toggle back between the block your aiming at or the tool depending on what your aiming at
This wouldn't be a feature for creative mode
Middle clicking on a mob will select a weapon (either sword or bow, not arrows)
I have no idea how simple or complicated this will be. All I know is that there are a lot of logical nuances to keep track of so for now I just want a mod I could use to create a demonstration video. Let me know if you are interested or need more information. I will fully credit the mod in the suggestion, on the video, and anywhere else I use it.
