After finally getting my hands on a way to play my old Pokemon Fire Red game, I started looking up different kinds of challenges. I was inspired to pick the game back up after I read about the Nuzlocke challenge, and during the time between the two events I came up with a challenge of my own: The Egglocke Challenge! (How original. If you come up with a better name, then I'll take it and credit you!)

---
The Rules are as follows:

1. You can catch whatever Pokemon you want, but if they're not being used then they should be in the box.

2. The only Pokemon you can use in combat are Hatched Pokemon and your Starter.

3. Non-Hatched Pokemon can be in the party if they're serving a purpose, such as HM slave, skills like Teleport and Dig, side effects of Abilities (i.e. Magma Armor to speed up hatching) (as long as those abilities don't require it to go into combat), etc.

4. If a Pokemon faints, it is dead. Either release it or place it in a Graveyard box.

5. Traded Pokemon of any kind count as Non-Hatched (Yes, that means you can't train received eggs. They can only be used for non-combat purposes.)

6. Hatched and Starter Pokemon must have nicknames, Non-Hatched Pokemon must not.

7. Switching to level up with shared experience may be freely done until level 10 (So, if a Pokemon is at level 9.9999 and skips up to level 15 due to shared experience, that is acceptable). Besides that, standard switching rules apply (e.g. you may use either Set or Shift).

8. Only one kind of each species may be Hatched at one time (So you could prepare seven Pichu eggs, but only one at a time can be hatched).

9. A Blackout / Whiteout is an instant Game Over (If you wish, you may keep the game so you can trade Pokemon and eggs away, and you can even keep going, but you cannot win the Egglocke Challenge if you lose a battle).

Here are some optional rules to consider:
1. Shiny Hatched Pokemon may be revived from death once. (My favorite rule.)
2. Revives may not be bought, but they can be used if you find them.
3. No drugs (Rare Candies, Stat Boosters, X-Items, Bitter Herbs, etc.)
4. No incest! Don't let parents use their kids! (You will need lots of Dittos for this run!)
5. Any other rules you want!
---

I decided to try out my own challenge on my Fire Red game and started with a Bulbasaur named "Steve?" (what else). I realized that I would have to get past the Team Rocket member in Cerulean City before I could hatch any Pokemon. That scared me a bit, but I was hopeful.

I caught a Pidgey, Mankey, and Pikachu (all female) asap so I could breed them later, and skipped the second fight with my rival (Kaz) because I knew I was outnumbered at that point. I kicked Brock's gravely ass, and in the process Steve? became an Ivysaur. At the same time it also learned Sleep Powder (my new favorite spam!). After that, I entered Mt. Moon and caught a female Geodude and a male Clefairy (!!!!) (Now I can do lots of good breeding with my Pikachu).

As soon as I entered Cerulean City, I went straight for the Gym and sopped up that mess! (Did you know if you fight every trainer with only a Bulbasaur, it will be a higher level than Misty's Starmie by the time to arrive there?) I was quite amazed at how quickly I was at my second badge, but I knew what I was up against and how likely it was I would fail: Kaz!

Long story short, he won. Posted Image In all honesty, that battle is the ultimate one that determines if you will be able to complete this challenge at all. You have to go up against his team of four, with at least two that can dominate you type-wise. They kept shaking off my Sleep Powder too fast, and I suspect that if I had some Super Potions I would've survived the fight.

Under my rules I have lost the Egglocke Challenge, but I will continue playing this game under these rules to see how time intensive such a run would be if I hadn't lost. I'll also plan on posting more about what I do in this topic. Anyone who wants to play and post about their challenge should! I'll be rooting for you all!

---
Edit: I just found out that it won't work in Fire Red, since you can't breed until you get to Island 4...Darn. I guess I should try it on a different version then, huh?

The easiest game to get this started in would be Black/White as the daycare is on route 3 and you only need to beat the first gym to get to it second easiest being Gold/Silver/HeartGold/SoulSilver as its after the second gym

I think I'll be trying on my heart gold

Edit: I just read the bulbapedia page and you need 3 badges to breed in Black/White so I guess Gold/Silver/HeartGold/SoulSilver is the easiest

So far in Crystal:

I started with Cyndaquil (Steve?) and made it to Goldenrod City without any major challenges. He's now a level 25 Quilava.

The Mysterious Egg hatched for me, and my Togepi (Brent) is now level 15. I taught him Swift and Headbutt, so he can now do reliable damage.

The Odd Egg hasn't hatched for me yet, but I did get a Poliwag Egg set up and a Pidgey Egg that hatched. The Pidgey (Sarah) is level 15.

I also caught an Abra, and before long I'll catch a Ditto and make an Abra Egg.

On to Whitney!

Sounds like a good idea... barring a few problems. The major problem is that you'll have to get through a large chunk of the game with only your starter - for Ruby and Sapphire you'd need to beat the (very difficult) rival on Route 112, for Platinum you'd need three badges, and for FireRed/LeafGreen you'd need seven badges and a filled Pokédex. Not easy.

What about Pokémon that are handed to you and have your ID? Like the Eevee in FireRed/LeafGreen, the Eevee in Gold/Silver/Crystal, and the Eevee in Platinum?

The problems you mention are an integral part of this challenge. It's true that you can't complete this run in many versions, but that's what makes it unique, in my opinion. I'm doing a Crystal run, and it's wholly possible to win in G/S/C/HG/SS because you only need two gym badges and two easy rival fights.

And to be honest, I came up with this Challenge when I didn't have access to my Pokemon games, so I didn't really have an idea of what I was doing at the time. (I'm a dolt.) It just sounded good, fun, and hard. I wanted to create something hard, but achievable; I just failed to realize how unachievable it was in many versions.

As to your suggestion with gifted Pokemon, I'd traditionally consider them "Non-Hatched Pokemon" (can't use them in combat, but can use them for other purposes.) However, if you choose to do a run on one of the harder games, I guess I couldn't fault you on letting gifted Pokemon count as Hatched. ;)

(Also, as a fun side-note, if you look up the Red / Blue speedrun, you'd see that the guy who did it won with only his starter Squirtle for fights. Pretty impressive.)

Ok guys! Today has been a crazy day, and it brings a huge update! We've got two new additions to the team, Kathy and Ivess!

Kathy is a female Igglybuff from the Odd Egg. Her Egg Move of Dizzy Punch, combined with her ability to Sing and her high hitpoints makes her a deadly wall! Notable accomplishments include beating a level 10 Beedrill without damage at level nine, beating a level 18 Snubbull at level 15, and "earning" the Quick Claw (She's so slow compared to the rest of the team...).

Ivess is a female Poliwag. Her father was a Slowpoke, and his heritage gave her the awesome Curse attack, turning her into a sleep-inducing tank with surprising speed (2nd best speed of the whole team!). Notable accomplishments include tearing apart two level 11 Grimers at levels 11-12, and doing the same to two Meowths (Both level 16!) when she was level 14-15!

After leveling up the team, catching a Ditto, and breeding out both an Abra Egg (the sixth member of the team) and a Cyndaquil Egg (just in case...), the team was well balanced at level 16 for all except Steve?, who still is level 26. We tore apart Whitney with a tactic that finally got a name today: The Smoke Bomb (Steve? spams Smokescreen)! It did of good job of keeping him from getting crushed under Rollout!

As we moved forward, Sarah evolved into a Pidgeotto after a tough fight with a bird trainer! We cleared the path and moved forward to the hardest fight we've had yet: the Sudowoodo battle!

I prepared for the battle by doing some studying of both my team and some online advice. I knew that it would be a tough fight, but I came up with a plan that used almost all of the team to catch that Pokemon! I started the fight with Kathy, hoping her Quick Claw would help. I had her Sing the Sudowoodo to sleep, and before it fell it Mimic-ed Sing! (That could've gone bad.) With it deep in slumberland, Kathy than used Charm three times to bring its high attack to manageable levels.

Before the foe awoke, I pulled out Steve?. Despite his type disadvantage and the danger he was in, he pulled of a Full Smoke Bomb (Six Smokescreens to completely tear apart a foe's accuracy!) and made his retreat.

From this point on, it was all up to Ivess. The core aspect of the plan relied upon her becoming as immune as possible to damage because she could both damage it (she was the only one who had any type advantage on the Sudowoodo at all!) and put it to sleep. It was awake after the Smoke Bomb, so I had Ivess put it in night-night and then use Curse three times to increase her defense. The end result was that the foe's Flail, at half health, only did five damage to a level 18 Poliwag. Ivess then put it to sleep again and, with a careful balance of Water Guns and Bubbles, brought it down to red health.

Still slumbering, the foe was ready to capture. I checked my bag to find I only had one Great Ball and two Pokeballs! Things weren't looking so hot, but I had to try. One Great Ball later...

And it was mine! One level 20 female Sudowoodo! All the better to breed you with!

It just goes to show you that you don't need the "best" Pokemon, just the right ones! I'm loving this challenge!

Current Team (Post Sudowoodo battle) (in order from weakest to strongest):

Egg (I'm pretty sure it's the Abra egg. If it's female, she will be Vivian; if male, Alexander.)

Brent - 18 Male Togepi
Metronome
Charm
Swift
Headbutt

Ivess - 18 Female Poliwag
Water Gun
Hypnosis
Curse (From Slowpoke dad)
Bubble

Sarah - 18 Female Pidgeotto
Gust
Quick Attack
Tackle
Sand-Attack

Kathy - 18 Female Igglybuff  w/ Quick Claw
Dizzy Punch (from Odd Egg origin)
Sing
Pound
Charm

Steve? - 26 Male Quilava
Quick Attack
Cut
Smokescreen
Ember

Hey, I'm going to start an egglocke challenge on SoulSilver soon but first, a quick question - Is it like an ordinary nuzlocke with one pokemon per route, first one you find?

I'll be posting info on my adventures soon :)

So, it took about a year from the original post for me to realize (or really, put into action) two things:
1. I am allowed to fail as long as I keep trying, and
2. You only fail if you give up entirely. Trying again, no matter how long it takes, keeps you from being ashamed at failing.

With that in mind, I started looking though all my old failings (writing, mostly), I rediscovered the Egglocke Challenge and decided to reanimate it! I was quite pleased at my earlier progress, so quite a lot of it is going to travel down a similar path.

Our story begins on a bright Wednesday afternoon at 3:03 PM with Vivian, a stalwart trainer with mountainous dreams in her head. Her quest began at Professor Elm's urgings as he handed her a female Cyndaquil she named Cynthia. She journeyed forward until she encountered a red-haired thief named Kamon (http://bulbapedia.bu...er_(game)#Names see here for why) forcing a stolen Tododile to fight for him. She trounced him, convincing him to flee as he foolishly revealed his name to her.

Energized from her battle, Vivian took her first Poke balls and captured a female Pidgey and a female Bellsprout that she traded for a male Onix. Throwing all those Pokemon into the box, Vivian proceeded to Falkner's gym where she incinerated his wings.

That's when Vivian received a phone call detailing the nature of the Mysterious Egg. She received it from Elm's Aid and proceeded to run into the future (thank you VBA!) until it hatched into a male Togepi she dubbed Xavier. Xavier's cruel training began immediately after birth as the trio ran back towards Sprout Tower to torture the newborn.

During their harsh ascent, Xavier learned the fearful (to everyone) Metronome and Cynthia evolved into a Quilava. The tormented newborn nearly died several times, but in the end all was well. The group continued south as Vivian realized she could teach Mud-Slap to Xavier to prevent him from dying prematurely.

Their journey is paused at Violet City's Pokemon Center, where Xavier and Cynthia are both at level 14 and Vivian waits for night to fall to find the mysterious Ghastly and for morning to rise where she will find a Poliwag to be the mother of a future fighter of immense strength...

And to answer your question, TheCrazyCreeper02, you may catch whatever Pokemon you'd like. The major requirement is that you fight only with Hatched or Starter Pokemon.

I recently had to reset my Pokémon Pearl because of a failed tweakign attempt (why didn't I found out about BSoD Tests before :(), so I chose Chimchar as my starter. I am now on Eterna Forest. As of now, my team is composed of a levek 26 Monferno (I know, you think I cheat, but I don't have an AR, my Pokémon is such high-level because of my intensive training methods). Oh well, the point is that my team is made out of a level 26 Monferno, a level 4 Bidoof (HM slave) and a level 4 Starly (Fly slave, coz Fly rulez). I'm planning to get a Buizel to be a Surf and Waterfall slave. My concern is, does my game still qualify for an Egglocke if I've never used the other 2 in battle, not even for dead baits? Or do I have to use my Pokémon Heart Gold, on which I only have a Cyndaquil from the Pokémon Lab and I haven't left that place yet?
