Hi, I am trying to connect to to a friends LAN server, we're in the same room and definately using the same connection and I still can't connect. I originally tried to connect with some mods installed - Optifine and a better flat map generator - but then I tried vanilla minecraft and the same error came up. I am using the MagicLauncher to launch minecraft, but I don't see why this would conflict with it.
I tried hosting the LAN server myself but it doesn't appear on his list of LAN servers.

Here's thye basic gist for the lazy ones:

Same connection, same house.
Have reconnected, still doesn't work
Him hosting = Appears in my LAN list but times out (Connection timed out : connect)
Me hosting = Doesn't appear in his LAN list at all.

I'm only visiting his house so i'm not normally connected to his LAn, but it seems to work well enough with internet etc.

Please help, we've been waiting for a pvp oppurtunity since we got the game and we can't host servers because of lag.

My brother and I are having the same issue. But for the person who can't see the connection, they can do a direct connect.

I have a very similar problem here.  I have a laptop that i can open to LAN and everyone with minecraft in the local network can see me... except the computer that my brother is on.
I can rule out the following:
-Firewall on both ends...(he can connect, vs. not at all...)
-Router...(no connection errors with other minecraft playing.)
-Versions of minecraft....(updated at the same time)
-My laptop...(works with other LAN worlds that other laptops host.)

Other laptops that run minecraft see me and connect just fine and vice versa.
He can't see my world... but can direct connect.
I can see his world... but time out when trying to connect.

Would "network discovery is turned off" be the cause?  (his computer says this, I think our dad turned it off...)

On the laptop you want to connect to try opening up a command prompt and typing "ipconfig /all" without the quotes.  Then take the IPv4 address and use that to connect.  Also make sure javaw.exe is allowed through the Windows firewall.

The problem is reproduce-able with any other laptop he tries to connect to. (he runs a desktop)
I think this problem lies with a setting somewhere with windows...  even though the firewall has java and minecraft open.
It is the one way connection behavior that throws me off...

I'm having this exact same problem. 2 computers on the same network. 2 seperate minecraft accounts. One desktop, one laptop. On the laptop, I can see the world started on the desktop but timeout during the connection. On the desktop, I can direct connect to the laptop, but cannot see the world.

after looking i have found that My " IPv6 " is turn off or not working  on the desktop that Can not find or make a LAN server.

I do not know how to turn on the IPv6 but that that is the only different's between the 3 PC's

Update for you all...
Computer A(the tower) viewed the network it was in as a "public" network.
We flipped it to be "home" and the problem has disappeared.

So one possible bit could be the firewall doesnt care if you put holes in it till you say you are on a "private" network.

I hope this helps.
