I go for efficiency, so the highest i've ever gotten is 50-51, then i spend it on an enchantment. I've killed the dragon before, but i only collected 40-50 levels, then i placed an enchanting table down in the end with bookcases and enchanted, then picked up another 40-50 levels and enchanted, so on and so forth.

My highest level is 38, still living, so it might get a bit more. I would have enchanted my brand new zombie-obtained iron sword but I still haven't found enough diamonds for the diamond pickaxe (for obsidian) and the enchantment table recipe...

Killing the ender dragon got me to 78, today when i was laying the finishing touches on the vault in which I store the dragon egg, I got to 79. Usually I am very paranoid about spending my levels as soon as possible for fear of losing them.
