To many, the name "Uniloc" doesn't mean much - however, that will likely change in the coming days.  Uniloc is suing Mojang for allegedly infringing on the company's patent.  What patent is allegedly being infringed?

It is not known at this time what, if anything, this means for Mojang.  Of note, Markus "Notch" Persson has certainly voiced his opinion on the matter, stating that he "will throw piles of money at making sure they don't get a cent".  Little else is known about the lawsuit at this time.

Uniloc appears to be suing numerous other gaming producers allegedly violating this patent, including Square Enix, Electronic Arts and others.

Any further specifics of the case will be covered as they develop.

UPDATE:  Ric Richardson has posted his views on the situation as well, which you can read by clicking here.  It is important to note that Mr. Richardson has had no direct part in the lawsuit of Uniloc vs. Mojang.

Not that I take this seriously at all, but considering the PDF of the lawsuit says 'Mindcraft' says to me this is another patent-troll, and it won't go anywhere.

Yeah Uniloc is not going to get a penny from E.A. and reading that a little there patent is there so they may get a rewritten patent nothing major. So summary Mojang is not going to be paying thousands to these people

It almost like me blaming someone for stealing my idea, when they had no contact with me whatsoever, and are LITERALLY on the opposite side of the earth. Most likely, if this is not complete bogus, this Uniloc company got a vague patent filed just so that (from a legal standpoint) everyone else is at fault.

That said, I am still in favor of Mojang, mainly because Uniloc is trying to sue so many poeple AT ONCE. Imagine a single person trying to start a war against an entire army... IT IS NOT A SMART MOVE

[/quote] It's one of the first thing i noticed when reading it , you'd think they would do a minimum of research on who and what they are suing.

Apparently these guys have been suing every big company out there and it's just part of being popular. More money for the lawyers.

Well, for those who didnt understand, the document apparently says that mojang infringed one of unilocs adroid programs, or program that the minecraft android app uses. what unilocs seems to want is money for the apparent losses of profit because of this supposed infringing.
can Mojang can countersue for false claims if this turns out to be, obviously, false?

In truth this could go either way. It's clear that in the past Uniloc have managed to sue over this ridiculous patent, however any jury with ANY knowledge of how software works couldn't possibly rule in their favour; 'calling home' is the most common method of authentication in software today, and there are countless examples of pieces of software that used this method prior to their patent existing.

In fact, from the looks of the company, they do *nothing* but sue to get by. No products, no services, just lawsuit after lawsuit. As it happens it's a genius business model, hampered only by their lack of attention to detail. That is, unless, I'm wrong in thinking that Mojang has never made an application called Mindcraft.

I'm glad that Notch is taking it completely in his stride; he would rather bankrupt the company fighting his corner than give in to such a ridiculous case.

...but, as XavierHorovitz alluded to, Mojang is *technically* (from a legal standpoint based entirely on pendantics) in the wrong. Yet, again, the patent itself is just plain dumb.
