im trying to grow a sappling underground but not having much luck.  its on a piece of dirt, and has a torch next to it.  how long is it gonna take to grow this thing?  it has 6 blocks of air above it and to the sides, and nothing next to it other than the tourch?

ive been waiting for awhile, do they grow while the window is not focused?  i am in an inventory window if it makes any difference, not the escape window.

Try bonemeal on it. If the bonemeal works, that room will grow a tree if you plant another sapling there. If it doesn't work, then the room either:
Isn't big enough.
Not enough light.

p.s. the inventory doesn't pause the game, bringing up the options menu however does

Or you can simply look it up on the minecraft wiki. Heres a link

Depends on the type of sapling, 6 blocks above it is only good for oaks and jungle saplings.  I recommend 7 for birch and 8 for pine.  Make sure you have two blocks of space around also.  So 5X5X7 space would be optimal for an oak.

Growth time can vary quite a bit.  Best to have several saplings so that you have to wait less.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

How long have you been waiting? I've you've been waiting an extrememly long time, I suggest either using bonemeal and getting it over with, or extending out the room you are making the tree in.

its a regular oak sappling.  i only bought one block of dirt into the underground farm so the very base dirt block of the tree is surrounded by air.  is that ok?

The torch could be in the way.  I've had that happen.

On the Xbox version I was trying to do something similar, and it wouldn't grow until I surrounded it with dirt, one peice on each side (include diagonally). I think it might be the same.

Assuming it has enough room to grow it can take anywhere from 1 minute to over 30 minutes for a sapling to grow. I planted 25 birch saplings, the first one grew within 1-2 minutes of planting, by around 15 minutes over half the saplings had grown while there were still a couple that hadn't grown by 30 minutes.

edit: In my tree farm I only have a dirt block directly under the sapling. The rest of the floor is smoothstone.

This is good for a view on how the trees can be placed as well as height tests.

Its not practical but it shows what you can do with what.

Personally I just have a large field, I plant two rows of 64 oak trees and place torches every so often.  I wander off and come back some point later and I have an instant wall of wood, two wide and however high the trees felt like growing.  My birch/pine trees I have [x][.][.][x] with two spaces all around and use bonemeal.  Usually takes 1-2 clicks as long as you are not standing in the way of where the branches will be
