I'm the guy who asked for it as a desktop, and I'm really thankful. As for creepers, I'm pretty sure plants/leaves might look better. Making it spiky would get away from the flat feel of things.
I think that part of the terror created by Creepers, aside from being a kamikaze bomber, is that you don't know what the hell that monstrosity, that ******* spawn of Satan is!
Think about it. All the greatest monsters from horror films, such as Psycho and Alien, are so scary because you never see the monster completely. At the most, you see it's barbed tale, it's shadow, it's silhouette, or the monster itself, but enveloped in shadow. The fear of the unknown and our adaptations for daytime living plays a large part in these horror films. If you take that away, you take away a lot of the fear with it.
You wouldn't be as scared of the alien if it was in broad daylight, would you? By contrast, having to face the alien and being in a dark, claustrophobic space station would be very frightening.
From an evolutionary standpoint, humans are adapted to day-time living. Our eyes have lots of color and detail receptors, but not a lot of night-vision receptors. We are instinctively scared of the dark because of the very real threats faced by our ancestors as they huddled around their campfires. This fear of the dark can be extrapolated into fear of the unknown. You don't know what the hell is out there in the dark. It was a lot safer to stay by your nice, cozy campfires.
Personally, I think the origins of the Creeper should be left unknown, as it is hell of a lot scarier that way. If it was made into something familiar, it would lose a lot of it's fear factor.
Did you make the mockups? I don't see this being too hard to make
I mean, you have the basic coding from minecraft, which could be implemented into it, and if you get someone to make the graphics like that, I'd probably sell better than minecraft.
Java would choke on this, as it has memory limits. It'd have to be C# or (more likely) C++, although I'd prefer C# since it would be easier to port to other platforms.
That's been the main discussion/argument among us so far. Many don't believe it would be possible at all, even on the most well-optimized game engines, because of the scale of the world.
I don't know much about programming, but you could tell it to load only the textures in your line of sight, like infdev does now. Those that are not in your line of sight would be simple numbers in the database. You could also implement a level of detail function, where it decreases the detail as you get farther away.
Creeper beta is now up. Added it to the first post. Ideas/criticism?

Oh wow, this is actually pretty cool. I'm more than curious how you made those, or if you did at most.

Did you take actually ingame screenshots and then edit them, or did you actually use a 3d software to make this?
Don't like the creeper all that much though.

Modeled them from scratch. Any ideas on fixing the creeper then?
That second cave image with the lava... wow... just wow. Really amazing.

I don't think you should retain the blocky structure for the creatures, or at least make it almost unnoticeable.
The problem with that is, we still don't know what a creeper is meant to be. It's hard to remake something in detail that you've never really seen clearly.

Well, it's green, it has no arms, and its only limbs are four little legs.
I assume it's some sort of plant monster, but not made of vines or anything. More like some creature out of a swamp. :ohmy.gif:
Without the arms.
