It's a legitimate question, but one that could be answered by Minecraft Wiki.

My Grandmother passed away on Sunday, the 7th of August, 2011. I am taking an extended leave of absence in light of this. My apologies.

I, too have been unable to dye wool white. Bonemeal does not seem to do the trick.

I find the statement their about making white wool confusing.  I tried bonemeal with non-white wool and it was unable to do anything regardless of configuration.  I haven't tried making white wool from bone meal and white wool because that would be pointless and stupid.  If that's the case, the wiki should clarify and say

"Bone meal is used to make white wool by crafting one white wool block with bone meal above it.  Other colors of wool cannot be dyed white, so this is fairly useless."

However using dye on sheep works and is funnier anyway...

You can't die colored wool. Period. You can use bone-meal on an un-sheared sheep to make their wool white.
Strangle a fish? Anyone?

Ive managed to dye white wool white to a success, but I only end up wasting bonemeal
to clarify further you can put one "Wool" and one "Bonemeal" in a crafting table and have a product of one "Wool"

Notch?...

Hmm that is odd, i have successfully dyed coloured wool to white wool, though it is alot more productive and easier to walk outside and punch a sheep, they are usually everywhere

What was your crafting pattern?

I've tried every possible combination of a gray wool block and bonemeal in  the 3x3 grid to no avail.

You cannot dye a colored wool back to white. Not even with Bonemeal.

Also. I didn't know 9 string = wool. Huh.

This. You can't even turn colored wool black, green, grey, blue, etc., let alone white.

Yes, my guess is that it's an oversight -- white wool is the only colour that can be dyed to another colour, thus the redundant "white wool + bone meal = white wool" formula.  I believe, however, one can use bone meal to dye black or grey wool white while it's on the sheep.

Bonemeal's dying abilities is not in dying wools to make them lighter (I.E. red wool + white wool = pink wool.)

But rather, in crafting dyes.

So, for pink wool, mix red dye and bonemeal to create pink dye.

Then dye the sheepeh.

Here's a dye-crafting image.
