Specs
HP Pavilion dv7 Laptop
Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1, 64-bit
Intel Core i7-2820QM @ 2.30GHz
8GB RAM
750GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
AMD Radeon HD 7690M XT
Minecraft, version 1.2.5

Problem
Minecraft consistently crashes less than 5 minutes into a single player game.

Process
1. Installed 32-bit Java 7 Update 5 using regular Internet Explorer after removing any previous versions. Ran Minecraft on fancy graphics, normal rendering distance, balanced FPS, and advanced openGL off. Game froze. Control alt delete, stop Minecraft, Java fails.
2. Installed 64-bit Java 7 Update 5 using 64-bit Internet Explorer. Ran Mincraft on same settings as above. Game froze and display driver failed then recovered, but game window turns white and remains frozen. Control alt delete, stop Minecraft, Java fails.
3. Uninstalled both versions of Java 7 Update 5. Installed 64-bit Java 6 Update 33 using 64-bit Internet Explorer. Ran Minecraft on same settings. Same result as above except game window turned clear.
*I have also tried the fix where you put a shortcut on your desktop and set its target to make sure that it's starting with the right version of Java. This has the same result as in step 2.
*When I was trying that fix, I noticed in the Java console that it was saying that it didn't recognize Windows 7. Set compatibility mode for Windows Vista, then Windows XP Service Pack 3. Same results as in step 2.
*I've almost always started with a fresh world on each retry.
*I have the latest display driver as provided by HP; AMD doesn't provide direct updates to this card.

I would very much appreciate any help that anyone can provide with this issue. I believe that it's a problem with Java, as sometimes while playing Counter-Strike: Source and switching between desktop and game, the display driver has failed then recovered successfully.

When it crashes, does it generate a crash log?    And btw, that last line doesn't bold well for the integrity of your drivers.

Also, do you have a GPU monitor installed?  Higher end cards on a laptop is like putting a bunch of wood planks in a room full of lava....

Yup know issue that AMD does not do that, they have a contract with an OEM computer manufacturer to do that.

However the driver that is compatibble from the AMD support site is the ]
"AMD Radeon 7500M/7600M series" driver.
A page to a download link http://support.amd.c..._vista64.aspx#1
And download the catalyst software suite.

After downloading this thing try to install it the normall way, i say a 50 percent change you will succeed on doing that.
The reason for that is that the hardware in the OEM computer is also branded by the OEM. with a different subsystem id.
Still the orrigenall drivers from amd will work.

So when it failed open up the device manager (right click on the icon computer, and then choose properties and click on the device manager).

Got to the folder display adapters and right click your graphics card and choose properties.
In the new window, click on Driver and then the button "update driver"
Now choose the option "Browse my computer for driver software"
Click now on the button "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
click the button have disk and click browse.

Now go to the location where the installer previously tried to extract the drivers (most likely: c:\AMD\Support\ )
and browse further into 12-6_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_whql\packages\drivers\display\W76A_INF

Choose now one of the files you are presented with (doesn't matter wich one)
now click ok, on the browse window and ok on the window "install from disk"

Now you have a list with the drivers the installation came with, and choose the "AMD Radeon HD 7500M/7600M"
Now go ahead and install the new drivers, and ignore the message it can be the wrong drivers (because of the branding).

And now the drivers shoud be installed.

p.s. this serries (not all) had some issues with opengl (becaus of the drivers, it came bundled with) on OEM dell and HP

It doesn't pop up with a generated crash log, if that's what you were asking.

I have the Catalyst Control Manager software installed for the video card.

Have you tried reinstalling the drivers?

No, because I don't believe it's a problem with my video card. It is obviously a problem with Java.

Think we need an error report on this, thanks to starlinvf's post I don't have to type it up

Download and run the bat file from the link below.   What this'll do is open a command window alongside a minecraft window and capture any errors reported by Java.

http://tiny.cc/errortest_bat

Once its stuck, let it sit for a minute to see if times out and gives any additional errors.   Then close the minecraft window.  Then right click the black window, select all, then hit enter. Then come back and paste the report.

It let me play for maybe 5 minutes, froze briefly, display driver stopped responding then recovered, game window turned white and unresponsive, control alt delete, ended Minecraft, Java crashed and the game window closed.

I tried again with my display set to Windows 7 Basic settings, because it was flashing to Basic as the driver stopped responding, and the same thing happened, except that the screen turned black instead of white.

I also tried with it set to compatibility mode to Vista and then XP and it still does the exact same thing; even saying it doesn't recognize the Windows 7 operating system.

Sorry for the late response, bit busy with work and boring stuff.

But I still think it is the drivers, you have to remove the ati drivers (they where slipstreamed in to the installation)
(after i did some digging/remembering)

But why is Minecraft/Java saying that it doesn't recognize Windows 7?

Updating the display driver worked; I just logged a few hours with no interruption. Thank you!

Hi, I am unable to play minecraft as well: it isn't a video problem (or graphics), and I am running windows 7. Here is the error report, using the program listed above:

If the link does not work, here is the original data that i saved in a notepad:

I have encountered a problem with this solution. I have a Samsung 6000 series flatscreen hooked up to the laptop as a secondary display, and when I use this fix, the bottom half of the TV screen stops working when the desktop is extended, but not when it's duplicated. You can still mouse over the blackness, but windows don't appear visable over it. It's worth noting that the video card number changes in the device manager when using this driver. It's like 6000 something instead of 7690.

I'm having pretty much the same problem as the OP. I'll get into the game, and Minecraft will crash to desktop within seconds of the world loading. Here's my error report:

Interesting note: I also have an AMD Radeon graphics card. I think that AMD is somehow not playing nice with the Minecraft client. I'm updating my drivers now - I'll let you know if it changes anything.

Oh, also, this is the more detailed error report referred to in the error report above:

Turn off the Advanced Open GL option in minecraft

Lycanever

You are trying to start Java with an Xms parameter that is too big, it is either illegally big (like say over 1.5G with 32bit Java), or it is more memory than your system has.

...aaand that fixed it. Thank you, gerbil! Do you know why Advanced OpenGL doesn't work for me? I'm kind of curious. It worked fine until I updated the client to the most recent version. I haven't changed my video settings in years.

No idea.  It's usually off by default, so you've had it on for a while?  Are you sure you haven't changed your video driver recently?
Or alternatively,  switched from a 32bit java to 64bit or vice versa?

Bugs in video drivers (or any software really) can be dependent upon the combination of things  / features that are being used.  So it is possible that nothing changed except some subtle sequence of video driver calls between MC versions.  Mojang did say that they fixed some lighting issues in the latest snaps didn't they?

Maybe. Like I said, it's been on for years. I did update my video drivers about a month ago, but there was no problem until I updated the Minecraft client to the most recent version. No change to my Java version. Very strange.

In any case, it all seems copacetic now. So, again, thanks!
