This idea is pretty simple, make an option to increase the amount of minutes (in essense, ticks) per day. This includes an option to make the day a length from 20 minutes to 60 minutes, following the same progession it would in the current version. An option for eternal night has also been discussed, as well as the ability to set the options for the length of day in server.properties on multiplayer servers.
This is not, however, an option to have a slider for both day and night. Proportion is key, so if you have a 60 minute day cycle, you would have 30 minutes of daylight.
What is debateable is how much darkness you would have.
Would you have 21 minutes of night, 4.5 minutes of dawn and 4.5 minutes of dusk, or--
Would you have 27 minutes of night, 1.5 minutes of dawn and 1.5 minutes of dusk.
The first is the standard proportion, the second is keeping dawn and dusk capped at 1.5 minutes.
I can't decide!
Most of the ideas discussed are liked by me. Be sure to comment, especially if you like this or have ideas to contribute!
Here's the nitty gritty...
At present, we have 20 minute long, 24,000 tick days in minecraft. One minute is 1,200 ticks.
I thought that this would be great for creating adventure maps. Sometimes when we make adventure maps (whether for multiplayer or single player), our focus changes from survival to following a storyline, and the ability to modify the length of day would help some (not all) maps in getting the most out of their adventure.
I think the standard ratio should be static (50% sunlight, 35% darkness, 7.5% dawn and 7.5% dusk), while giving the player the ability to set the length of day (max of 72,000 ticks, one hour day cycle) at the start of the world creation. Multiplayer maps should also be set upon creation of the world...
And an alternative
Instead of keeping the standard ratio (see above), keep sunlight at 50%, set dusk and dawn to a 90 seconds each, and have night be the remainder (so the longer the day cycle, the longer the night). To be honest, I like this idea a bit more, but maybe the previous suggestion makes more sense.
I had another idea to include with this post, but it's so big, it deserves its own post. If you'd like to comment on it / read about it, click the spoiler, and use the link.
I guess that could be useful.
As long as the cycle is set when you create the world and is not editable afterwards (except with third party editors) then I have no objections.
Hm...I like it. I can live in the tundra and set nights to crazy length like I'm in Alaska or something.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
It is an interesting but depressing reality that most politicians are just regular people with power. And most people would be as bad as politicians if only they could get some power.
This would be awesome for that...would save some map creators the trouble of having to edit in a ceiling to block out the sun over an entire map if they want a night map.
First of all I want to say thanks for your replies
The idea of increasing the length of time is to give us more flexibility in the way we play our minecraft games, whether it's just plain old survival or making adventure maps for use in single player or multiplayer.
I do wonder what the bare minimum could/should be for a minecraft day (again, a minecraft day is 20 minutes with 10 minutes of daylight). A 10 minute day would only have 5 minutes of daylight, and plenty of night time to fight the baddies, but who would want to fight badies for less than 5 minutes?
Feel free to comment if you have any ideas you would wish to contribute.
The minimum should be a 100 tick cycle. Just sayin'
That would be crazy! Imagine watching the sun go up and immediately seeing the moon drop! lol
The skeletons would be burning on and off with the rotation of the sun and planets.
Maybe shorter day cycles would be as difficult as longer day cycles I'd imagine

Yeah I agree.
Also, think of how maps work in minecraft. When you make a map, it's center location is at the location where the map is built. If clocks were to be created, and the time changed, the clocks would likely still have the standard tick timer, and the world's tick timer would be changed, requiring new clocks.
Hm...I like it. I can live in the tundra and set nights to crazy length like I'm in Alaska or something.
I think we would have crazier nights no matter what. A 60 minute minecraft day would still have 21 minutes of darkness at least (compared to the standard 7).

Again, yeah, eternal darkness mode is a great idea, just give us 10 minutes of daylight and then turn up some catastrophic event!
Sounds like a good idea.
I think it would allow more of time to gather resources and you could always sleep through the night but it would make a fun night time, would seem endless.
I could actually see this being an interesting setting to play with in world creation.
Also, an eternal night setting in game modes would be very interesting.
It's interesting, along with eternal night you could have eternal day for certain servers and creative mode building projects.
I suppose it could be two options then, one to set the start time, and another to set the day-night cycle, along with a cheat command for changing the cycle.
i support the idea. it would be great to have configurable lengths of day and night in the server.properties file with an option to freeze the game at a specific time of day. this way day is fully customizable to each server or game.
Sounds like a good idea.

For always, Support.
Thanks!
True, but don't forget, every extra minute of night is an extra minute a zombie beats on a door! I'm curious to see how this would affect npc villages. Would 14 minutes of night cause more zombies to spawn in testificate villages until they hit a critical mass?
I could actually see this being an interesting setting to play with in world creation.
Also, an eternal night setting in game modes would be very interesting.
I think this is by far the most popular feature that people are talking about, were it to be implemented.
Cheers

I thought that the easiest way to implement it would to work on ticks per day (standard is 24000 ticks). Increasing the full day to 48000 or 72000 ticks is what I had in mind, along with a number in between (though, it makes it easier if it's divisible by 1200.
For eternal night, in my view, it would just be a checked true / false setting (default as false). Eternal day just reminds me of peaceful while carrying a bed around with me, although making maps for multiplayer RPG maps would be useful to have an eternal day setting... except I'd end up changing it to a normal day/night setting afterward.
This feature is heavily supported by myself! I would like it even better if it could also be an option in the server.properties.
Thanks man! Yeah, I have only been running servers for a short time, so I'm not too sure about the configuration, but having an option in server.properties would be a must for me as well!
this suggestion has my absolute support!i love night time, but i got only 7 minutes to enjoy it and i want to make the night more longer and therefor i want this added into minecraft!!!
Indeed-
I think no matter how you slice it, either an extended day or eternal nights, you're gonna get longer nights which will mean more things happening during the night. Again, I wonder about critical mass... the longer the night, the worse things could get, whether they're prevented or not. Within 7 minutes, maybe there's only 4 zombies knocking at your door, but after 14, maybe there's a heck of a lot more (if they're not dealt with first!)
I might have to test / prove this on a server with a testificate village, adjusting the night so that it's almost always midnight.

But, what if I want accurate 24hour days? I want it to feel like I really wasting my life!
I suppose if you want a 24 hour day cycle, you would need 1,728,000 ticks per cycle. I know little to nothing of programing for this so I'm not sure if this is possible but it would be nice to see where the limits are
If you want to make the day just 2.5 Seconds, ok, but i would suggest a day night cycle's minimum should be one minute (1200 ticks)

I think 1200 ticks would be a bare minimum. Leave it as an option at best. I would generally perfer to keep my minecraft days at standard length of longer, or play around with eternal night, but options are for exactly what people want them for
i support the idea. it would be great to have configurable lengths of day and night in the server.properties file with an option to freeze the game at a specific time of day. this way day is fully customizable to each server or game.
Thanks for the support. I like the idea of being able to freeze the game time in multiplayer. Imagine epic battles that are 'supposed to' fit in one day. Seems to be better than adjusting the time of day.
Lots of suggestions and many thanks to all of you.
Again, let me know what you think, I'll make a few edits to the original post soon.
Looking back on this, the best way to do eternal day/night would probably be with an alternate version of the time setting command...say, "/locktime". Though, to have it available without cheats enabled, maybe an option on map creation to set starting time and the option to set the timescale as "Infinite".
Support. But how about the ability to change the day/night cycle between 12,000 ticks (10 minutes) and 1,728,000 ticks 24 hours.) That might add challenge to the night, as right now a night is just *walk outside for 5 minutes, kill stuff while taking nearly no damage* but with more realistic day/night cycles, there would be time to make errors in night combat, as well as much more daylight time to build with.
