So my fps is really low (about 15 fps on good days) even after I increased my ram usage. Ive decided to use optifine, and i downloaded winrar to open the minecraft.jar file. However i have a few questions on what to do next.

1:do i delete the contents of minecraft.jar and put the contents of the optifine folder in? or do i just put optifine in?

2:can i install other mods and use optifine at the same time?

3:does optifine conflict with mc patcher? i downloaded mc patcher to run my HD photo realizm texture pack\

Thanks!

1. Just drag the optifine files into the Minecraft.jar

2. Yes, although depending on the nature of the mod, some might conflict.

3. I use MCpatcher and not optifine, but I believe optifine can achieve the same as MCpatcher when it comes to high res texture packs.

Like the guy above said, just drag contents of the optifine into minecraft.jar, but don't forget to delete the META-INF folder within minecraft.jar if you haven't already, or minecraft won't open up.

Thanks!

And how might I be able to tell if they conflict or not? try running them and see? by then would it have already messed things up?

I havent deleted the META-INF folder, but its not in my .jar file.

Usually the rules for conflicting mods are quite simple. If both mods do the same thing or alter a specific aspect of the the game they will conflict. So using optifine with a mod  that does something similar might result in a conflict. using optifine with for example, Mo's creatures, won't be a problem.

You have to run MCPatcher first to get the "Custom Colors" extension. If you want that, run the patcher with only that option selected, and then install OptiFine normally. Otherwise, OptiFine can handle most texture pack requirements.

Oh, i have minecraft.jar and minecraft-1.2.5.jar.
i dont do anything with my minecraft-1.2.5.jar, right?

So I have to run MC patcher with custom colors in order to get the META-INF file?

And once i run mc patcher with only that, do i run it again with the other options i want? If not, will i still get the other options like improved grass?

Sorry, im not quite sure how the mc patcher works

Nope, just Minecraft.jar.

The minecraft-1.2.5.jar is a backup. The minecraft.jar is the one the game runs, so yes, you modify that one. Enjoy optifine, it's amazing.

I don't believe so. Just unzip the minecraft.jar, drag in the Optifine files, then zip it back up and play.

I can't say much on the matter for Windows users as I use a mac and have my own programs and techniques :P though the process is pretty much the same (it's easier on macs 'cause we get a good, free archiving utility :) and easier access to files)

Im still confused on where the META-INF file is, because i havent deleted in and its not in my minecraft.jar folder

Also, why do i need to run mc patcher on custom colors only?

MCPatcher removes the META-INF folder itself, don't worry about it.

OptiFine has support for all the other features that MCPatcher has, EXCEPT the custom colors. Most TP's don't use custom clors, but if yours does, you'll need to do the MCpatcher like I said previously.

So i did everything, and now when i start minecraft it freezes on the MOJANG screen.

I did everything you guys said.

UGH.

Ive been playing minecraft for about 3 months, and all of a sudden, it has started running really slow and freezes sometimes when i create a new world. Thats why i wanted optifine, but now i cant even play the game.
