On PC I always mine at 12.6 because lava will never fall on your head but on Xbox there are whole numbers like 11,12 etc. and lava will still fall on you up until layer 16. What level is the best on xbox?

Diamond is the most common between 5-12 so tough luck lol

Just be careful and watch out for lava. Have a block ready to place incass you break through into some.

Between layers 10-16 , ive never found diamonds above layer 16 and below layer 10 i hit too much lava.

Could be different on other worlds though, im not sure.

Diamond spawns in the bottom 17 layers of the map. This should help everyone. It's from the PC version but should also apply to the Xbox version as well. Just cut the numbers back a bit because of the limited world size but it should still hold true.

Post above contains good information, what I do is dig down to bedrock then dig straight for about 20 blocks and create 3x3x3 Sections, you see all the blocks apart from the middle. Diamonds don't tend to fill a single block (Yes they do but rare). I find this way is simple and quick.

Hopefully this will help you find your ultimate goal of diamonds.

Y coordinates on XBox are off by 4. You can demonstrate this by building a tower as high as possible, where your map will tell you the current height is 129, and by digging to the lowest layer of bedrock which the map will say is level 4. If you're lazy, go to the seashore and check your map to see that it's level 66, not 62.

So I always dig for diamonds on level 14, which is more accurately level 10.

No theyre not. Walk upto the sea; the coords show 64, and the sea is 64

Regardless, 14 does seem to be the Xbox's 10 as far as diamond hunting goes. I've found diamonds as high as y=21 on numerous occasions in the Quesadila seed, but overall, y=12-16 seems to be the best layers to search.

Call me layer 0, I can make your bed rock.

As far as i know diamonds spawn in layer 1 till 16 (Including 16) but that was on pc, on xbox i found diamonds in layer 19 at highest. I started a branch mine on layer 2, 5, 8, 11, 14 and 17 (Layer im walking on). Found diamonds in all of em.
It takes some time, but it will get you about 5 diamonds per 10 minutes. (Based on myself mining for 2 hours). I reccomend starting with the highest one, that way you can fill up lava pools before you dig into them at the layer below. And dont give up if you don't find diamonds at first. Keep trying. :)
Oh, look, diamondssssssshhhh..... o.0

For me I found most of mine on the first 3 layers up from bedrock.

As I understand it, bedrock occupies the first 4 or 5 layers, so it really depends what you are using as your reference level, is it the first level without bedrock (which means you could be 4 or 5 out from the coords) or the real 'layer 0' which is coordinate based.

*edit*

as an illustration this
http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Ore
has a graph showing ore vs 'height above bedrock'

whereas this
http://www.voxelwiki...raft:_The_Miner
has a graph based on coordinates.

You can see in the second that the first layer is only bedrock, then layers 1-5 are a mix of bedrock and some ores, and the bedrock stops at layer 5.

If you rely on going down to bedrock and back up you could be 4 layers out.

MINE ALL THE LAYERS!!!

No, but seriously, Quarries are the way to go.

Found 12 diamond blocks on layer 6-7 (inc. Bedrock) without even bothering to explore the caves I came across except to finish off my decorative lava waterfall.

I have build several quarry's, and in all cases, it costs more iron/diamond (For tools) than you get from it. Even when i only use iron. And if i use stone tools the time it costs isn't worth it. They're fun, but not practical.
I reccomend branch mining, leaving 3 rows between each corridor. :)

Actually, I believe in the xbox version there are only two layers of bedrock.

The whole number thing is because of the characters height and eye level.  You're 1.6 because your eye level is 1.6 blocks tall.  If you subtract 1.6 from 13.6, your feet are on level 12.  Alternatively, if you're at 13.6 your chest is at layer 13.  (edit: this is for PC coords, of course).

Not sure which method 4J's coords use, but I'd assume the second one.

I haven't really had a chance to experiment with the coords.  I'd be interested to hear what the explanation to CDarklock and MobyGuy's discussion is.  Sea level is usually 64, but can be 62.  Top block is... 127, right?  So 129 would be eye (chest) level.  Is that how it works?
