Custom Lava/Water/Fire Won't Work?

How come when I change the fire, lava, and water in the terrain.png NOTHING happens to them? I even tried MCPatcher and it's not working out. Ugh, man, I really want this stuff to work. Can someone please help me? If so, 1 million for you.
