PlanetSide 2 is a massive, mutliplayer, online, first-person shooter (MMOFPS) made by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE). It features massive continents with bases, outposts, and stations to which must be captured by either of the three factions: Terran Republic, Vanu Sovereignty, and the New Conglomerate. I'll just offer some general things that should be known about the game. Bare in mind, this game is Free to Play. You can sign up for beta on the PlanetSide 2 website. For even more information on PlanetSide or PlanetSide 2, see the wiki. Information for open beta can be found here. Any discussion of PlanetSide and PlanetSide 2 can be brought here.
__________________________________________________________________________________ General
As mentioned before, PlanetSide 2 is a massively multiplayer shooter that can support thousands of players for large scale battles. The continents can span dozens of square kilometer with large environments. On each continent, there are bases which can be fought for by the three factions. The bases themselves are about the size of a standard fps map and since the game is consistent, you wont have it load for the next map. Rather you go storm the next base at anytime with your teammates. The world is completely open and explorable. You will have a choice of many weapons, abilities, and scopes to your character or vehicle to be effective against air, infantry, or ground vehicles or a mix of two. There can as well be massive air combat as well as ground combat. You must join a faction, one you prefer to fight for.
__________________________________________________________________________________ Factions
In PlanetSide 2, you will be a part of one of the three factions listed below. Each are fighting for different goals. You will see faction loyalty amongst players which support a bit of role-play and seriousness into rough combat against each faction. And with each faction, there is a different look and style of vehicles and units between them. Check out for more info. Terran Republic The Terran Republic (middle symbol) has a militaristic government fighting for peaceful coexistence with its imperial authoritarian might. Vanu Sovereignty The Vanu Sovereignty (right symbol) is a technocratic faction that fights for the belief that humanity can move forward with the study of the advance technology of the Vanu. New Conglomerate
The New Conglomerate (left symbol) is actually a group of loosely connected rebel groups and idealistic freedom fighters fighting more against the ideas of the Terran Republic.
Once a faction has been picked, you are able to join a squad as well as an outfit. A squad is a group of 10 players joined together. Joining a squad can help you communicate better with players and further enhance gaming experience by giving a better cooperative environments in completing a task in combat. Two or three squads joined together can be a platoon. An outfit is like a guild or clan which a collection of players can join. Aside from just simply being in a squad for better cooperation, there may be other benefits in-game from joining one. (I will have to further look into this, sorry)
__________________________________________________________________________________ Customization
Your weapons and vehicles are highly customizable. You can change your class and weapons to your liking. Your class could be tough and durable and good for anti-air, anti-infantry, or anti-tank or a mix of the three but slow and unable to ride vehicle or capture bases which would be the Max unit. You can change him to be light, and highly mobile but lesser armor which would be the Light Infantry. He can be a medic or engineer for repair and healing, or an infiltrator for stealth and long-distance sniping. Switching between classes would be fluid so you can move between each upon death; you are not stuck with a permanent class. As well as changing your weapon choice, you can change your character's appearance and also your vehicles appearance. _________________________________________________________________________________
Abbreviations
There are quite a few abbreviations that might help to know. You'll find them used aplenty in-game and around the PlanetSide 2 community and you may find them confusing.
(These abbreviations were used in PlanetSide 1 and some may not make it to PlanetSide 2 due to changes.)
ADV MED (Advanced Medic) - Archaic name to be expected. A medic with means to res people.
AI, AV, AA - Anti-Personnel (Anti-Infantry), Anti-Transport (Anti-Vehicular) Anti-Air.
Airterm - Air Vehicle Terminal. Backhacking - A strategy in 2 varieties - "Backhacking" usually describes hacking a base with defending force staying guard and "ghosthacking" represents a hack that has no defense force on it. BD - Original name for "backdoor", a door that was placed on the outer side of base walls in PlanetSide, can make a return in some form. Boomer - Is a CE - a sticky explosive box that has a remote trigger - Used on door frames and corners as booby traps, now known as C4. CC - Control Console (a remnant of PS1, I expect this short name to be given to the hackable points of the game) CE(ACE by the book) - Combat Engineering - a noun naming all the goodies engi has to place. Cloaker, Infil - Infiltrator, the first name comes from PS1 VO "Cloaked enemy detected". CR5 - The name actually stands for Command Rank 5, a secondary (maxed) level that gave you ability to use global chat. Expect it to to be the nomaded name for Leadership-maxedout people in PS2. Dyson - Expect this to be a name for VS ES jet - Scythe. It was the first try in naming it, it didn't get along with the community. Google the Dyson images if you want to know why. ES - Empire Specific EZmode - Describes the doctrine of NC in the first game. Let's see if the tradition moves on to the sequel. Farming - Often "interfarming" is the taking of an interlink facility (or other base) on an enemy controlled continent with the sole purpose of attracting 2-3 times your own numbers in enemies, in order to take advantage of the facility features and get yourself and your team lots of kills. Planetside 1 tactic, used for fun or for pulling substantial enemy from the main fights in order for your empire to progress. There's a second meaning of the word, under "whoring". Fishheads and all thing fish-related - nicknames for VS. Because there's something fishy in their design. Fury, Basilisk, Wraith - names of the 3 original ATVs (which is now has it's own name - "The Flash") Genhold - Generator Hold - a strategy from the original, PS1, I don't expect it to return in PS2 due to absence of gens, but just so you know - the strategy implies disabling the generator, leaving a base entirely offline with only CC operational. All bases in the original game were linked and provided benefits through the chain to each other. Downed generator broke the chain until it was repaired. GG - Galaxy Gunship - A later addition to planetside, a separate type of galaxy that acted as gunship instead of troop transport. Expect Galaxies equipped into Gunships to be named so. Ghosting - Capturing a cont with small to no resistance Gluegun - Repair Tool with "glue" being its ammo. HA - Heavy Assault. Not only stands for class but also for 3 most powerful empire specific weapons: Jackhammer (NC), Lasher (VS), Mini Chaingun (TR) Hotdrop - The use of an aircraft in order to fly over a facility/tower and eject and land on your desired location. The name also has 2 specific subnames: Galdrop - A hotdrop perfomed in group from a Galaxy, and Mozziedrop - used to great effect by re-secure teams due to the speed and individual control a single aircraft provides over a galaxy. Despite the ES fighters presented in, the term will still exist, though it will become faction specific, imo. Jammer - an EMP grenade, there's no certainty if the name stays or goes, but the return of those is highly expected in PS2. JH - JackHammer MAX crash - You've heard of it no doubt. A strategy of an amassed MAX push. MCG - Mini ChainGun OL, PL, SL - L is for leader, O - outfit, P - platoon, S - squad. Can probably expect CL and GL in the upcoming game with C being continent and G being global. OS - Orbital Strike. REK - A hacking tool from the original, that's not making a return in the release version of PS2. Resec, to resec - To resecure a hacked base. Rexo - A name for an armor type from the original, that became the design basement for PS2 Heavy Assault class. Expect HA's to be called rexos. Smurf, Elmo, Barney - NC, TR and VS players accordingly. Spawntubes (Or tubes) - A slang not so hard to decypher - A term used to describe an immobile spawning structure inside a spawnroom. Squishee, Grunt, Softie - all foot soldiers no matter what armour they wear. Maxes are not considered squishees. It may origin from the sound you hear when you drive your tank over a footsoldier. To hack a base - To initiate a hacking procedure. With PS2 system that means hacking >50% of the CCs. In PS1 there was only one CC per base so the roots of the name are quite obvious. V-term, V-bay - Vehicle terminal. The second usually stands for a section of a base (if a vehicle terminal is inside the base) responsible for spawning of the ground vehicles. Can also be referred to as "the hangar". Warping - 2 meanings: 1. Also known as ADADADADAD, strafing with bad connection resulting in irrational character movement, dictated by the imperfect PS1 netcode. 2. Teleporting to another continent. Zerg, to zerg - To move aimlessly with the general battle flow. Other meaning - to attack en masse. "Zergfit" describes an outfit (clan/guild) of little tactical sense or leadership, that uses lemming-style attacks, in order to win battles through sheer numbers or exhausting the enemies resources.
Whoring - A synonym to "farming", this word means solely racking up kills using an easy method. The word is usually used in conjunction with another word, describing the method (as in "towerwhoring, mozziewhoring", with "killwhoring" being a general description). A noun "killwhore" is a noun describing both a person who is getting kills by unconventional means, and, if bears no negative accent, - a player, very good at maintaining high k/d ratio.
Hate to seem like I am bumping my own thread but I just got a beta key and redeemed it. Anyone on the Terran Republic, I will see you on the field of battle. I'll see some others on different factions as well but likely you'll be dead.
PLEASE KNOW THIS HOWEVER!
Also, I'd like to mention that there will NOT be any bit of info on beta testing on here. That will go straight to the PlanetSide 2 forums. As stated:
"Should you choose to participate in the Beta testing, everything associated with this game testing will be considered confidential information, and you may not discuss it with anyone except other players through the PlanetSide 2 Beta game testing forum only."

I hate FPS games. They are annoying. (mainly because i suck at them :3 )
But when I saw the video of this the first thing I did was look for where I could pre-order. Lol
Oh don't worry about ordering. It's free to play when it's out.
Maybe I'm in the wrong crowd with this thread or there just isn't that much hype with this. Really this game is stunning for alpha and it's free to play. Well I am happy to introduce people to it if this thread was for anything. The first PlanetSide didn't get a lot of recognition unfortunately or at least not as much as it should have. I feel quite excited to play this. More so than any other game.
Wait what?! I'm really suprised as the first planrtside at that time was a huge sucess so I'm kind of confused why they would make it FTP.
I also have to say FTP as the disadvanteges that when they don't make money they:
Buyable Currency
Buyable weapons with the real money currency
I find this ruins games like Battlefield heroes and Battlefield Play4Free!
Yes I do quite see it like that. I am sure they have some other way of making money. There has to be I mean c'mon how could anyone do that? What I do know is what they plan on you buying wont be something like purchase to win the game or anything annoying or game breaking for those with no money.
I know one thing, Free To Play means anyone can get in and I just don't want idiots, trolls, or anyone looking to just mess around in the game. I am not quite worried however since PlanetSide 1 and 2 relied and will rely heavily on cooperation of those in a faction/squad/outfit. As long as the community doesn't implode in on itself, I think things will be fine.
-I included another part to the OP about squads, outfits, and platoons. You can join in groups in this game. I might want to include that. Also there is a wiki. I'll have a link to that up there.
-Also added the awards PlanetSide 2 has gotten from E3 2012
-Added screenshots (Because I am an ambitious little weasel) and a link to the news on the time of beta. (Said to come out in the next few weeks)
Pardon this bump.
Here's hoping to start a bit of discussion, perhaps?:
What are you excited for in PlanetSide 2?
Who are you fighting for? (Picking form the 3 factions)
What are your previous experiences in the first PlanetSide?
God I sound too desperate. Also, if you have just stumbled upon this right now, here's hoping you're looking for a great FPS because this is the kind of game to check out for sure.
Of course I will be Terran Republic, the most militaristic group who will crush you dirty Vanus and New Conglomerate rebel scum! If I see you when I play, there wont be a welcome mat for you! (Yes, this is how faction loyalty is played out and you are able to insult the other factions as that is acceptable if used mildly like this.)
And if you are hoping to get a beta key any sooner then you can attempt begging one at their twitter to get one or trying to grab a public key. Hope you have quick fingers for that. I know I didn't.
Quite a lot of Vanus here. You pesky Vanus wont stand a chance. We fight for coexistence, yet you see yourselves better life forms than us simply because of your technology. You aren't even human anymore. Loyalty Until Death! (Again this is how faction loyalty plays out.)
Too bad it will be FTP, would rather see it B2P so it get a more mature community.
Oh well :<
no, that wouldn't work. Just look at Call of Duty and how "mature" most players are. Not everyone's immature of course, and it's not only in CoD. (i don't want to start a flamewar.)
On topic though, I think most people are going to play as Vanu or Terran, and New Conglomerate will have the least amount of players. I'm really excited about things like airbattles with a hundred planes in the air, that will be awesome!
While it's true that free to play games are mostly bound to get a terrible community, the game itself will require cooperation a lot in order to fight. Squad leaders will be giving direct order. Platoons will be brought in to attack specific bases. Galaxy drops on top of a base, taking it from top down. A lot in this game would require some teamwork which is why being a "lone wolf" isn't always fascinating. You'd like to be noted that you're a great player among your squad or platoon. Your Outfit could be well known.
Everyone looks to be an important part in the war and do the best they can among their group to gain recognition and maybe some fame for it. What the game has really helps it fall together decently. All that it requires is a look out for those who would otherwise look to ruin the experience which is promised by devs. There will always be those and there were a few on the first PlanetSide which wasn't free to play. Just watch carefully for those.
Update: Adding abbreviations used in-game to OP. There are actually quite a few and you might want to be familiar with some common ones. You could end up being flat out confused by them if you aren't aware of what they mean. There were used in PlanetSide 1 and may not make it to PlanetSide 2 due to plenty of changes.
I like how SOE is making the stuff that you actually pay for all cosmetic and stuff, then the vehicles and weapons are payed for with the resources received from capturing bases. Only problem on my mind is weather I should be VS or TR... Currently I'm researching the weapons used by these two factions, and I've learned that the VS sniper rifle looses damage power at distance, so I'm leaning more towards TR for now.
Nooo, don't go to the TR. The VS is the future, doesn't matter if you lose damage with the sniper rifle. We have all the cool stuff.
Plus the fact that you will get all those annoying TR-soldiers in your team. No, I think you really want to choose the Vanu, especially since I'm also joining the Vanu.
I think i'll have to wait till the public beta (unless i get lucky and retreive a beta key) before I decide permanitly. I have to agree though, the Vanu do sound pretty sweet with their speedy vehicles and awsome amounts of alein technology, but I'm perfer haveing to acount for bulet speed and bullet drop then be looseing damage. I'll just have to see when i get the chance. It all depends on the amount of damage lost. When i do think abought it, im more of a medium to close range sniper, so the damage drop-off souln't effect my sniper gameplay much.
well i signed up for beta and if i get a key i will probably LOVE the game
You can get a beta key via twitter by following them because I don't know if just signing up for it will get you in closed beta or open beta or both.
Also, if you are a PlanetSide 1 veteran July 1st is Planetside Day where people will play for the last time the first PlanetSide before they close the servers down for good for PlanetSide 2.
Is there any site that lists all or some of the weopons, and maybe some infomation a bought them? If anyone know's any site with such a theme, please give me the name.
The reason vans are popular is because the Hover Tanks you get, that means you can go over water plus you will have more futuristic weapons so laser weapons as the TR only have military grade stuff, so bullet firing weapons and track ran tanks.
Overall the different races will be better in different ways
TR- Faster firing guns (if like PS1)
VS- More advanced equipment
NC- I don't know
I am probably going to be an infiltrator, so sneak in base, disable main gate shields, team raids base= Captured base!
Or I will be a Engineer, bombing through the air with a plane. (Evil look)
Oh, and the NC have a lower rate of fire, but more damage, and I think more armour.
