So mining around in an Underground Mineshaft... I come across this large open room. Almost a perfect square. Check the picture, the only thing added are those torches. Any one come across something like this before? It just seems to unique to be random.

Ive come across almost perfectly square corridors in large cave systems. The best explenation is that it was a glitch that was supposed to be an abandoned mine shafe (Look at the fence in the far right.)

Yeah, those are normal. They're in pretty much every mineshaft.
Goals... We all need 'em.

It was in the middle of a mineshaft. So maybe.

I've seen smaller ones like it, but this one was significantly larger than the rest.

Everyone's saying they're pretty common but I've never seen one, It may have something to do with the fact that I rarely mine above lava level. I can literally count the number of mineshafts I have come across on the fingers of one hand.

I've seen exactly one of those.  If you dig, you'll find the dirt floor is exactly one block thick.  My theory: sewage treatment facility.

That's part of a mineshaft like other people have said. I've noticed that you'll also run into little staircases cut into rock in mine-shafts as well. I've come to the conclusion that those "staircases" and the square rooms are both part of the mine-shaft area and not natural per se.

This is the starting room of a mineshaft. Up to four mineshaft branches can branch out from this room.
