Overview

Earlier today I made a post about time efficient wheat farms and I showed a how it works, but didn't go into detail. So here I will try to make a better post about an self harvesting wheat farm,. It is an original design and I want to show it off, but it does have a few drawbacks but nothing to major. Please take time to read this post I think that you will like it.

Okay so first off here is how it looks, I do have to admit it is not the best looking but hey it works.! :)

Here is how one of the interior farming levels looks, It is pretty simple and you get to see a very important part of the farm.

Next here you can see the collection part of the farm, you press a button which I will show you in a minute

You push this button and you harvest the entire farm.

This is how it looks after the button has been pressed.

Than here is how the levels look after you have harvested, as you can see you have to climb up the water fall to re-till the soil and replant also. Not to much work to be honest.

After the replanting you are done! Ready for the next harvest.!

Pros

  • It can have as many levels as you want.
  • Very simple to keep running
  • And it self-harvesting.

Cons

  • Some of the items might not fall all the way down the water.!

Well the title alone is somewhat mis-leading since it's not actually self harvesting, you still have to press the button and then go round and make sure everything went into the water. I don't know if it's possible to make a truly automatic self-harvesting wheat farm, but this isn't it. It is possible with melons and pumpkins, but collection is a bitch.

Also, it's not very efficient. It takes a lot of space and doesn't harvest all that much wheat. The problem is the pistons, they require a lot of space. What works far better is to just have a single piston the releases a water flow across the crops. That would harvest all the wheat and transport it to one point for collection. And as of 1.3 the piston won't even be neccessary, you could do it all with a single dispenser.

Yeah, as mentioned above, a single piston with water flowing to wash all the wheat down is simpler and gives room to harvest entire fields of wheat.

Also, curious as to how to make a self harvesting melon farm. Do you just do a block update detector linked to sticky pistons under the dirt?

Agreed. Your model is aesthetically pleasing, but rather inefficient to build, in output, and in collection.

You use a piston facing the spot where the melon grows, and run a circuit from a red torch past the spot and to the piston. Leave a gap so when the melon grows it completes the circuit and activates the piston, pushing the melon and breaking the circuit again. The only problem, and it is a big one in all honesty, is that a lot of the melon slices end up on the rig instead of the water. It's also not very pretty with all the exposed redstone. But it does allow for maximum efficiency from each plant since it harvests the second the melon is grown.

I have a much better design.  No redstone, no pistons, just whack the wheat with your fist and it's harvested!
