Okay so, I just really, really suck at making houses. On all of the servers I play on, almost all of my houses look the same. They all look along the lines of:

...this monstrosity.

So can you give me some ideas for better houses? I'm not talking about any giant castles or huge mansions, but something better than this. It would help if you also uploaded some screenshots of your pictures. Thanks!

That one is good, now add some rooms or something to it. Have all of your boxes and workspace down stairs. Boxes in one room and crafting table/furnaces/upgrade tables in another. If you have an upstairs you can keep the shape of the house just make it all one room for a bedroom or something.

If you want to build a good house you have to sit and visualize what you want.

First try and not make it square. Maybe build underwater or in caves as that gives the creativity without it being built and has no outside

Look at EthosLab's videos on youtube his houses is underground and has so much creativity and depth to it

I'll try uploading screenshots later, but here's a quick tip:
Use more materials; Mix and match, you'll be surprised to find out how much better it can look if you add even a block or two of glowstone or some logs at the corners.

First of all, stop talking down to yourself, because that's not nearly the worst I've seen. I'm not a particularly good architect myself, but I've noticed that using logs as supports for other things (door frames, wall corners, and window frames) and keeping rooms at least three blocks tall on the inside makes for a good look. Variety of material is also very important. If you didn't have that window or those birch plank...whatever they're called, it would be a monstrosity.

Okay well keep in mind I did that in two minutes for example. They don't all look just like that. It might not be that I suck at houses, it's just I can't think of any other designs...

Squares can look good sometimes, just don't make cobblestone boxes and add more detail!

Here's your house, logs added, looks much better IMO.
I'd also replace the birch planks things with something else.

You say that sucks? My houses are just squares. Simple as that. And just for space, it's more like a 10x10x3.

I've never been too good with houses either, but using logs, stairs, and slabs can make a simple house look nicer.

This. That's almost exactly the way I build my houses.

Don't think a lot about the designs ideas. For now observe the house designs of people who are very good at this and study them. Then go improvise and experiment with the stuff you learned from it. Use real building pictures too. Once you figure out how something looks in real life you will find it much easier to design it in MC. Starting out the building with some geometrical shapes may help you learn faster too.

I haven't the slightest idea why, but my mind inserted "I don't always build squares, but..." right before that.

Looking better. Put a different type of block underneath the window. It'll sort of help make the plain wooden plank wall look a little better.
