Be patient, there are so many topics with other people who have problems too. It takes time to go through them all.
I'm assuming your running a server on a PC. Open up your start menu, under search type cmd, then open it up. Type the command ipconfig. Now scroll up till you see IPv4. that's your computers IP within the local network. When you open up ports, you must assign that IP address to it. Even if you are accessing the server from outside your home.

Okay I did it but I got this:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
© Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
C:\Documents and Settings\Liam>ipconfig
Windows IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2:
Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.5
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
C:\Documents and Settings\Liam>
It says nothing about the IPv4. Yes I'm on windows.

Is your servers IP address the same as the computer you are hosting it on? This is done in the server properties file.
Sounds like a silly question, but it helps to rule out obvious ones.

Im new to this server stuff. Ive just downloaded the Minecraft server launcher thing from minecraft.net. I ran the program and it seems to have completed it. Once its done and run what do I do? Then am I done? Cause that seems too simple... If it is, how do I find our ip address? Thanks in advance!
