You'll get a lot of different opinions on this.
Grid/branch mining at level 12 is what I do.
I usually bring a sword, a large number of stone picks, an iron pick, and a bucket of water.
Get really quick at switching to your bucket of water. A lot of diamond mining can involve running into lava.

Prepare lots of Ladders about 100 I guess? Dig a 3x1 whole down, oh and you also need tons of torches. About 1 stack will do. While going down always remember to put the ladders so you can climb back up. Just keep digging until you hit bedrock and go back 12 blocks high and start mining. That's all I know. I got diamonds in less than 20 minutes or less if I'm lucky.

Btw it helps to bring wood. Like half a stack. When you're on a roll or your inventory is full, being able to make a chest or make more picks/torches really helps! I can't tell you how many times I've been mining and ran out of supplies just as I find a cave.

Find a place where you want to mine, dig all the way down to bedrock in a staircase manner, then hit F3

You must focus on only the

'y' coordinate.

Diamonds are probably found on level 10.6, 12, or below 16. Try making a shaft on any of the listed levels.
There's ton of tutorials on Youtube on finding diamonds, so you could try that too. :)

I just dig down to bedrock then start strip mining at bedrock. I know alot of people say to go to level 12 but i just clear out a 20x20 arear then dig back up level by level. It take time, but its a big pay off.

For a bit of fun - and definately a challenge, you could try an open pit-mine. Please note that this is most definately NOT and efficient way of finding diamond. But you will end up with a pretty massive hole in the ground :D

My current project is digging a pit-mine 4 chunks by 4. Started at level 64. Currently down to level 49.

But as others have already pointed out, the modt efficient way of finding diamond is branch mining at lower levels. Diamond can be found anywhere between levels 1 and 15.

For me, I dig straight down till bedrock, and dig 5 blocks upward. then i mine around there, making a small "room". I did that today and found 2 diamonds. But you must bring a stack of ladders and torches. This usually works in the "Plains" biome. Hope that helps :D

Oh, and bring lots of stone picks and one or two iron picks :P

Watch out for lava though, quickly find a ledge and pour water if you encounter lava.

Go mining at levels 10 or 12 (y: 10 or y: 12).
Strip mines work best
Go for a long time in each strip (200-250 blocks or so)
200-250 is a good blanket because, hey, you never know
Bring lots of food with you, especially if you plan to make a lot of strips

I like y = 12.6 (eyes level, feet y = 11) because that way the ground you're walking on is level with the top of the lava lakes.  When you come across one, just dump out your water bucket next to it, and then you can walk straight across your nice new obsidian floor.

I got a total of 45 diamonds today in about an hour by mining in a cave. I was using a fortune pick, but I found about 16 diamond ores.

Stay above the lava lakes, they are deadly.

No one has said xray yet. Lol, just kidding. But branch mining is an efficient way to mine as well.

If you dig at level 12, you wont be running under lava lakes. You will always be 1 block above and you will be able to see if the next block can be walked on to, or needs to be bridged with the stone. If you dig at level 11, you could discover that the next block is actually lava block, leaking into your shaft. Prepare water or stone blocks for defense. My best findings are if I dig at level 10, and up to level 13 (shafts are 3 blocks tall), of course using branch method. Explained on YT.

Exploring caves is by far the fastest legit method to find diamonds, but not in very high numbers. For that, you'll want to... branch mine? Strip mine? I'm so confused about these terms I just don't even know anymore. The kind where you mine out tunnels with two blocks in between them so that if there is any diamond ore you will see it on one wall or the other.

Branch mining and spelunking are the best things to do.  Sometimes, I'll remove all the stone in the area because I consider it to look nicer, but that's not a very efficient way to go about it.  Of course, if you do that, you will end up with a nice slime farm.

If at all possible, bring a fortune pick.
