Hey all.  Long-time lurker, first-time poster here.  I checked the wiki and did some searching here on the forums but I didn't see anything concrete, so I figured I'd put this out there and see what kind of responses I received:

How much of a fall (in terms of number of blocks) must a mob take in order to ensure that it dies?  Also, what are the affects of water of different depths on this?  I've built my base into a mountain that almost rubs up against the maximum build height (the trees on top of it flatten out) and have dug a huge-ish hole in the center all the way down to sea level (pics are forthcoming).  The idea is that mobs that spawn on the top of the mountain will randomly plummet to their deaths, mainly for my viewing enjoyment.  Being that this hole is open to the sky, one imagines that "rain" would fall down it, so I'd like to put a small pond 1 block deep at the bottom (maybe I'll play with currents to have any drops delivered someplace, maybe not -- I haven't decided).  My hope is that this 1 block deep pond doesn't allow for mobs to survive.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

If it's just one block, it shouldn't stop their deaths. Two blocks I think prevents damage.

You can get hurt, though very randomly and seldom. Try falling from 128 to 4 or something. You may need 3 blocks for that.

It sounds like your just doing this for fun... not for harvesting. I would say replace said water with lava, and make it a volcano base.

I too would to know this as I have built  large hollow T-Rex and I would like him to shit skeletons and creepers down a big hole.

23 blocks is the minimum kill height.

The way it's worked out is

Damage = (Height-3)/2

Jumping counts as an extra half-block.

Outstanding. Thanks a lot.  And thanks to everyone else for their input as well.
