DO NOT POST SUGGESTIONS HERE!

If you want to read about being a proper critic on suggestions rather than how to make them. Visit yoshi9048's scrumptious thread about it!

"Do I seriously need to read this?"
I can't say every poster here needs this, but I would probably just say "yes" anyway. You might pick up some helpful pointers you haven't thought of before.

"Good god, why is this guide so long?"
A more valid question would be "This guide is as long as it needs to be. How did you accurately pull that off?"

This guide attempts to cover every possible thing, and if it doesn't, people make suggestions in this thread to cover more things so this guide is even better at covering everything.

You'll see that after these long images, there's still tons of sections to read. I put the titles there so you have a general idea of what mistakes and presentations you shouldn't make, and the description of those sections are put in spoilers just in case you don't understand a section.

"You know what? I don't need this guide. I'll be fine. I'm cool!"
Okay then, no one can take over your free will and mentally force you to read this guide. Remember, that once you make that dumb thread about "new ores" and everyone is not supporting and digging into you. You'll understand why this thread is here.

How to Properly Search

A lot of people have made redundant threads but actually did search beforehand. That mistake is most likely filtering the search wrong. Observe the image below:

The things highlighted in green are the basic needs. I think the bottom one is the most essential, because people have searched for topic names but didn't filter that to only the Suggestions forum, thus people end up getting results from every forum at once that share similar words in thread titles.

That aforementioned case causes threads from the Suggestion forum to be spread out too far, making people think that a specific suggestion thread isn't redundant. It's a pretty easy mistake to make.

Threads You Are Not Allowed to Make

Excuses You Shouldn't Use
And you should feel bad if you use them.

Presentations You Need to Avoid
Because people will probably hate you a little if you don't avoid them.

Except for not addressing the horrible grammar(with which about half of the suggestions are written ._.) a decent guide, with pretty fonts.

I think the grammar is to emphasize the point that the posts are bad.

I know this isn't an actual suggestion, but I'm letting it stick around for now. We have been meaning to change the sticky about how to come up and display suggestions, and this might be something we are interested in. I'd actually be interested in contributing myself if I could get the opportunity.
Looks like my free time is going to be divided equally between Minecraft suggestions and Starbound suggestions from now on.

If people were willing to think for themselves, these types of issues would not even exist... unfortunately for many, this is not the case...

Everything has to have a positive/negative balance... this even applies to content already in game... take the creeper for example:

Good:
- provides a challenge
- makes caving/traveling at night/storing valuables dangerous/risky
- adds character to the environment
- ect...

Bad:
- blows up items/blocks
- damages armor
- damages health
- ect...

It is all risk vs. reward... it is what mentally drives our very lives... a creeper encounter can result in disappointment, satisfaction, fear, relief, ect... either a good or bad reaction/emotion, but never always only good or only bad.

If only good, the reaction's/emotion's effect weakens, until no stimulation results.
If only bad, the aspect becomes unbiasedly hated, and can result in the overall dislike of the game.

(this particular scenario only pertains to those who enjoy survival minecraft on easy+ difficulty... in any other gamemodes the creepers are irrelevant... this example was not intended to pertain to all people, which could be extremely difficult to accomplish at a satisfactory level, if not impossible...)

Nice guide. Very well presented.
No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...

although im not very fond of reading or making suggestions (they're pretty pointless for me) this guide is really something worth looking!

If this is going to replace the "how to make a suggestion" thread in the stickies, I'm for this.

As far as theme goes, the theme of the game shifts as new content is released. It's not a question of whether a concept fits, it's a concept of if it's feasible with how the game is going.

Having gundam robots is pretty far-fetched if there is no intermediate technology to explain it as well as laser rifles and EMP grenades. This shit simply does not fit unless you go through the elaborate steps it takes to make it fit.

No, saying that the stuff was "sent from the future" is a hokey cop-out that would need much more explanation than the devices you are attempting to explain, try again!

Other concepts like Minecraft Katamari need no explanation as none exists for it except that it's awesome, they acknowledge it'll never be part of the game, and are content with that :P.

Yeah this is good even though it kinda pressures people to post fewer ideas; "You will be embarassed." Hey it usually is the conversation that yields fruit, not the way that everyone tries to think for themselves so they would not be embarassed. Manners of course play an important role!

I think this guide should be applied to Mojang also ;)

Is mojang checking if the adds fit with every single minecraft player in the world and does every add fit the "theme" of minecraft, especially after Jeb? The game has been quite off-road of what Notch planned it would be..

People posting fewer ideas would be a good thing quality over quantity.

There is one thing I would add to this, a section about overly complex suggestions. Every feature should be implemented on the simplest way possible without ruining the feature, utilising existing blocks, items and mechanics as much as possible.

However, look at suggestions like eighth-blocks and the nether rift. They are incredibly simple suggestions which are also difficult to explain.

This is a really good guide, but it is missing some detail

1. You should write how to use the search button in it, that would be a great idea
2. You should give some good examples of balance
3. You should also put in stuff that is impossible or hard to code to avoid

Which also mentions the Herobrine thing.

Wow!

Anyway. I do have one very minor criticism with this guide; I don't think suggestions need pictures to be good. Pics certainly help, but describing can work just as well.
Just a minor criticism.

A criticism/correction for the Criticism point:

"If someone rejects your idea in a troll-like manner with no real reason behind it, then sure, you have a right to throw negativity right back."

No, you do NOT have a right to throw the negativity back.

Simply report the offender and ignore him instead. By lashing out you are
  • Feeding the troll
  • Letting him get to you
  • Throwing your discussion off-topic
  • Engaging in a pointless battle over a non-issue.
  • Ruining your credibility with the other readers.
