so.. how do you guys organize your chests, what do your signs say, what do you store in a specifik chest etc?

For every chest, I put a label on its side to what items I should only put there.

Minerals chest(coal/iron/gold/diamond/redstone/obsidian/lapis)
Building Materials chest(cobble/stone/sand/glass)
Wood chest (logs/planks and any craftable wooden items)
Tools/Armor chest
Mob drops/Nature/Farming Chest
Miscellaneous (dirt/flint/gravel/etc.. uselessthings)

I sort items by alphabetically organized double chests. Each chest has two signs that face whatever direction in my storage room I may be going.

For example, the Arrows chest to the Blaze Powder chest.

my organization method is fairly simple:
1:make and place a load of chests in a random fashion
2:dump every thing i dont need atm from my inv into some of the above mentioned chests
3:when chests start to get full repeat step 1

Yeah. I have a massive Ethoslab style storage room for all of this stuff except for the potions which are in my potion lab which is also based of Etho's design. I have a farm for practically everything you can farm and I have had this same base since Alpha 1.2.6 and I simply keep MCEditing it into a new world each major update which sometimes kinda sucks because I have to re-light up all of the caves to make my hostile mob system work again and I have to make sure that my slime farm ends up in a slime chunk.

I have a Cobble chest, two Dirt chests, about 4 Stone Brick Chests, a Tool chest, a Misc chest, a Botany chest and a Valuables chest.

And then I Sort them all with CI.

* gunpowder, flint, lighter, slimeballs, misc..

Apothocary:

* potion making supplies

Warehouse:
* cobblestone
* stone
* assorted bricks
* dirt
* sand, sandstone, gravel
* snow
* nether, soul sand
* glowstone, redstone lamp, glass
* doors
* fences
* stairs and slabs
* misc building supplies
* sapplings, grass, leaves
* wood (logs)
* wooden planks
* coal

I put a two blocks high of whatever type that may be against a wall, or in the wall, stick a chest in front, and label above with a sign.  You may waste some resources this way, but I like to be able to see what I'm looking for, makes it a lot easier to see and pick.


Edit: And if I place them next to each other, I make one further in the wall, or out from the wall.

that sounds inpressive, can you make a video of your base so we can see

I make a 2 block wide and 2 block tall hole in the wall(Herobrine style) and put a double chest in the bottom 2 blocks. Then I remove the 2 blocks above the 2 blocks above the chest(The hell did I just type), and destroy the 2 blocks above the 2 blocks I just destroyed(Seriously WTF!), and put a double chest above the 2 blocks above the chest(Seriously why am I typing like this), then I put a sign above the first double chest and put the category of the chest and put an arrow pointing to the chest below the sign, then put a sign next to that sign and put the category of the chest and put an arrow pointing up. I repeat for the rest of the walls.

Honestly do you need a double chest(Holds about 60 slots) for most items in the game ... You could combine chests to make categories like this, 1, 2 or 3 chests for Mob items, a few chests for natural blocks(Cobblestone, dirt, sand, sugarcane, water, lava, smoothstone), a couple of chests for crafted items and a few chests for items that don't fit in the chests I just stated, if you like your system, you can keep it, I am not forcing you to do this, I am recommending this simplicity to you.

For chests that contain blocks (including ore) I like to place blocks of that type above the chest. This makes it easy to locate the right chest visually without having to be close enough to read signs. For all other chests I use signs.
