You upload it somewhere and put a link to the .zip file in the config.

i dont know why they dont just add a texture pack folder to the server and let it use that as the location.

I think the problem with having them stored locally is you would have to personally upload it to anyone who connects to the server, rather than the texture pack being downloaded much faster from another source

I don't get it. I'd rather just go on my favorite texture pack than forced into one. And if it doesn't force you into one, I get it even less

I have to agree here.  I don't see any purpose (except one, I'll get to that) in this.  I wouldn't mind a "reccomended texture pack" option where the server could tell you the pack it recommends for that particular map (and download option through the server itself), but it should not force you into it.

There is ONE purpose that it has:  easy way to deal with x-ray texture packs.  But that's making the majority of players who play on servers without cheating have to suffer for the cheating minority.

I tried it out just there. It just says, "The server recommends that you use a certain texture pack..." and you can decline downloading the texture pack.

Some things that look awesome with one TP look horrible with another.  This is more for people who made a world and want to show it off or adventure maps or the like, not so much for active building servers IMO.

Jesus...This could be dangerous if Mojang's not very careful.

Assuming it just checks to see if its a zip file, it would be trivial I think (from my limited knowledge of programming) to write a virus that meets this criteria. Or write a program that installs a keylogger...

You know, a system that steals your bank information, social security number...Or your minecraft email and password for that matter.
Most definitely not a creeper.

I really hope Mojang has a solution in mind for this problem. That's all. I really don't plan on using server-side texture packs from severs that aren't highly accredited and trustworthy.
Most definitely not a creeper.

This is kinda cool, but people may not want the txt pack, I see this feature being taken away.

^ which is why I believe it's optional. You don't need to use it if you don't want too.
