I wouldn't mind a flintlock pistol that has a extremely limited life span making bows better for overall combat making it so that the flintlock could be overpowered but have draw backs and could make a major drain on sulfur and on iron making so that people couldn't easily spam with it on survival.
Nope I would want more like medieval weapon type things as in
Portable cannons
Crossbow
Duel wielding
Wip(You could retexture a fishing pole xD)
Explosive vest(Is that medievaly I mean you could use flint and steal to light it)
I mean I don't guns would really fit at all in minecraft I think it should stay sorta Medievalish
Oh and A magic staff
Guns are plenty medieval, they've been in China since the 12th century and in Europe since the 14th century.
And Minecraft isn't medieval, there's no definite time frame.
*They would be a hassle to maintain (assuming the gun is realistic in a sense of "homemade" weaponry) Keyword: "Assuming"
*All ammo would have to be created, not found (unless you find treasure, or a new mob is created Nothing wrong with that
*They are not traditional to Minecraft What exactly do you mean by "traditional"?
sorry, but that's all i can come up with. if you can come with any good ones, then please let us know
I am completely against the idea of having fully automatic weapons in the game. In fact, even the idea of a semi automatic weapon kind of irks me, at least balance wise. It would take tons of convincing for me to want either of those.
As for the idea of guns, I'd support it as long as it does not take it too far along the road of technology. To compensate for that fact that we have no machine tooled weapons, perhaps the flintlock/hand cannon/percussion lock/matchlock/any other pre 1800s weapon could have poor accuracy? After all, a majority of them were made to be fired in LARGE volleys. Perhaps a spread about 1/2 (perhaps less?) of the one the fire charge fired from dispensers has. Give it low drop, and a semi-high damage, while making it reload somewhat slowly (typical operation time expected from a professional was 15 seconds, so...) This would make it more effective in close range, but still fail to compare to a bow in longer ranges.
I am noticing a disturbing lack of Ginpowder in the gunrecipes littering the thread.
That's because gunpowder isn't used in the manufacturing of guns. Gunpowder is used in the manufacturing of bullets .
If anything, a presense of gunpowder in the device would be disturbing to me as this indicates that simply using the device would cause it to explode in your hands causing catastrophic damage to the user.
Guns are relatively simple, at least in the early days. Fill flashpan(or load percussion cap), pour powder down tube, toss rest of cartridge, ram in place. Trigger releases a spring-loaded lock which either puts a lit rope(or other slow-burning thing) to flashpan's powder, flint striking steel creates sparks, or percussion cap is hit, releasing flame down a tube. Very simple, to be honest.

Automatic weapons wouldn't even work with the current combat system, so no worries.
To be fair, a metal tube on a stick isn't a gun- it's a hand cannon.

Modern guns however...
Even modern guns are simple (maybe not so much the bullpup rifles or the Glock18), just misunderstood to be complicated. All a modern gun really is would be a trigger that activates a release on a pin that has pressure on it. When the pressure releases, the bullet fires, causing the weapon to load another round in the process.

The extraction mechanism is far from simple- good luck building it by hand
I don't think you should've made this thread, all there is going to be arguing and a few suggestions here and there...I do have a suggestion though, I hate arrows filling up my inventory. I suggest that there should definiteley be quivers. Maybe press a key or something and you put the quiver on, I don't know.

to the contrary, this is more a debate than an argument, with what seems like many people agreeing with a gun being added. And debates are rather helpful in today's democratic society. And bullets would probably be no different than arrows space-wise. Not only that, but to add on to modern guns: i don't believe Minecraft has a big enough crafting grid for say an M134, so thus it must remain simple. I stick with my idea of a musket, however the blunderbuss, hand cannon, and flintlock pistol strike my fancy as well.

An official thread for guns existed long before this one. It had it's problems here and there (as this thread has already had as well). Guns are going to be suggested whether the majority wants them in the game or not. This is just a way to keep all the discussion in one place.
Going through and editing the OP for the new ideas.
Edit: Done. Probably going to reorganize the poster ideas based on the weapon/item type.

How about the Chu Ko Nu, the Chinese Repeating Crossbow? It could basically be the old bow: faster fire rate but shorter range and less damage. That's pretty true to what it is in real life.
I say a big stupid(I tend to add the word stupid when I'm talking about something big) rocket launcher.

The X's are Obsidian, and the O's are gunpowder or something. The launchers have some range, and has 1 and a half more than the tnt explosion. I think it would be good to get revenge against creepers, and would help a lot with the Enderdragon. Just not when fighting something next to your home

The Enderdragon is a joke anyway once you break the crystals. I killed it with a stone sword without taking any damage from it.

No, an RPG is too modern for Minecraft. I know it doesn't have any specific time period but the most modern items in the game are from the late renaissance. That said, though, some king of old-timey cannon could potentially serve the purposes you listed.

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...

Yes, because having an integral part of a weapon as gunpowder is definitely safe...
Since when have weapons been made using gunpowder, again?

You put the stupid in the wrong spot bro, it's supposed to be "stupid big" not "big stupid", they are both adjectives. Consider it as "A B", A will always modify B. With "big stupid" you have just modified "stupid" with "big" showing HOW stupid the idea is.
Now, if you were to replace it with "stupid big", you're saying the device is so big it's stupid. I'd change that if I were you.
Also, What lolpierandom and myself have said, "gunpowder isn't used in the crafting of guns"
Gunpowder can be used in the creation of a rocket if you don't mind having your face scorched off by firing. Most rocket launches I've seen have some pneumatic device which forces the rocket from its cannister before the fuel ignites a safe distance from the user's face/crotch/whatever-else-the launcher-is-close-to-when-fired.
I suppose this topic semi-invalidates my topic D:
