If I had to choose between glass and panes - I prefere glass.

For regular windows, like in a house, I use panes. If I'm making something like a viewport (for underwater structures, or chicken coops, or something like that), I'll use blocks.
Also, blocks are also brilliant if making glass bridges or towers.

I think I would like glass panes more if they had a separate texture associated with them so that I could either add a window type frame to them or maybe make them look like stained glass.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Glass roof - Glass
Windows - Panes
Domes for something - Glass
But overall, I like glass

A. When playing in Survival, it's less resource costly (I think) and
B. It fills the whole area you put it, and I don't like it when I have holes.
Also, I agree that panes need a separate texture, but they do server a purpose. For example, my friend once used it as railing for his floating house, because he hated fences. And glass panes are more clear-looking.

Couldn't agree more with you here. I can't stand using glass in my buildings with those dumb white lines everywhere. Gotta use a texturepack for sure.
