I've done a bit of searching around various forums and couldn't find a decisive fix for this problem. I've owned the game since few days before beta release, and have played SMP before, but it's now giving me this error for every server I attempt to join.

Any help?

EDIT: Including various information.

Running on Vista.

Did some more searching, still unable to find a solution that works.

I would still appreciate some help. I tried IRC but no one responded.

Bump

To me, this happens on both the exe and the browser version.
I've only tried 2 servers as of yet, one of them is a simple one a friend of mine made with no extra security. I don't know about the other one.

Would really like to see this fixed.

Yes, it happens in both versions of the game.

Nothing has been going on with my connection. Tried about everything I could think of as far as my connection.

I've tried various servers over the past week or so. None that I know of had any sort of extra security.

EDIT: I can log into classic MP servers in the browser version of the game.

I still require some help. I've been trying to log in to several servers every few days to see if the problem will fix itself, but it has yet to do so.

This is becoming increasingly frustrating, and I would appreciate any help with this situation.

if you are still having this problem, you need to check your hosts file.

go to start > run
type in 'notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts' (without the quotes)

look for a line with 'minecraft.net' or 'www.minecraft.net' and remove it & save the hosts file.

restart minecraft and you should be able to connect to servers.

It seems that I just can't connect to minecraft.net now. After entering my information it waits a bit and tells me that I can only play offline.

EDIT: Seems like other people are having the log in issue as well. I suppose it's just actually down, and not related to this.

Has anyone found the fix for this? It's on my own server. I was able to get on just fine until there was a terrain glitch, so I reloaded. Now it can't verify my username.

Please read my quote. It does not matter if it is on your server or not, the fact is that your server has to contact minecraft.net which is what is creating the issue. Wait for a webserver update! It shouldn't be too long now.
