I too think this sounds like a great idea. And hope there will be a new light engine soon to support this.

Brilliant idea! I think it would be simpler if it was made just like this.

Sounds like the best idea ever. You sir, have just made my day.
I spend my days finding diamond and then falling in lava... Then I find more diamond and fall in more lava... Then they invented the enderchest.. Now I live in a diamond castle. I SUPPORT THE ENDERCHEST!

Yes, I considered that idea when i made this topic, but simpler isn't always the best. It has to be creative and challenging based on the rarity of an item. "wrapping" a light source with colored blocks to create colored light ensures that people cant just spam with colored light and that they have to think strategically and creatively within their space to create colored light.

In other words, simplifying it down to just simply adding dye to a torch or adding dye to a glowstone block removes the fun. -_^

Well, I gritted my teeth and came up with a prototype.

Posted Image

The main problem with this is that "light" doesn't update properly, and gets out of sync, because it's in sync with the chunks instead of blocks. Also, I think it'll be difficult for me to go any further because of the level of math involved.

I agree, Minecraft has always had a habit of making block placement require strategy. Why change that now? I think Minecraft needs to add more strategy in the game, as personally, I feel it doesn't have enough. Which is why I'm glad that they're adding a lot more redstone stuff in 1.5, as this will allow for more strategic designs.

Wow this is amazing, Kovu! Posted Image Is this done with the current lighting engine, or did you have to make some adjustments to it? As i know some people who tried to do this earlier in the topic was unable to get more than 2 colors working.
Also if it isn't too much to ask, would it be possible if you could try the 'wrapping' technique i posted in the OP? I understand that for testing purposes, using colored redstone lamps is ideal but it would be interesting to see colored glass and light working together. -_^ I believe the poster above has a good point regarding colored red stone lamps.

Also, do you mind if I add this into the op?

edit* can you post a screenshot at night? o_o that would look beautiful
sorry about all the questions and requests, I'm just so excited to see this :3

And about the implementation of colored glass, is that something that's possible or...?

Do whatever you want with it.
Not sure about the colored glass thing. Theoretically, it could be done, but it'd require a LOT of calculations.

Looks awesome!  Especially the colored glass.  I could do with/without the colored sand.
