Why is it unrealistic? There are all kinds of animals that lay their eggs in different environments from the one they live in as adults.
Biology time~
A true biological equivalent to the Lava Snake does not exist in real life due to their nature, so we'll have to look at creatures that inhabit at least a rough analogous area: The ocean.
Most air breathing ocean dwellers throughout time have been viviparous, IE: growing an embryo inside themself as opposed to an external egg. Sea snakes and whales are creatures that do this today that live in the ocean. Almost all mammals are viviparous, baring the echidnas and platypus
Now, while it is true there are creatures that do come onto land to lay eggs (Sea turtles and sea kraits being the major one), they've kept landgoing adaptations. All species of sea snake bar the sea kraits cannot move on land, and are effectively stuck there. The turtle's hatching strategy of hundreds of young just wouldn't work with internal development
I'd say that the closest creature to the lava snake would be the Mosasaur. Large, snake-like air breathing predators. And we know mosasaurs were viviparoous
Therefore, based on their body design and the one creature in the fossil record that resembles them, lava snakes would not crawl onto land to lay eggs but instead give birth to live young
I will make a god damn Biology and Ecology of Minecraft with Mods series if we keep this up. This is my one warning. Please don't make me do this. I don't want to go into the evolution of a Creeper

You know what would be cool? An addon to this mod that prevents them from naturally spawning, replaced with a bunch of crafting recipes you get by using fossils and stuff. Ive always had trouble with mob mods actually spawning the way they should. Even when they work, it doesnt work like vanilla passive mobs with the despawning and everything. Plus the animals often become a nucience when they show up in places I dont want them to be. I would however like to use non-despawning animals to liven up certain places.

I only suggested it based on the apperence of the front flippers which mind you if animal was smaller look strong enough to haul it onto the nether rack also keep in mind that they may be reproductively mature before obtaining full size...(this thought also came to me after viewing such a creature wriggling about on land no doubt due to a glitch.)this was also inspired by the head crest which I would imagine would be larger in juveniles and used for burrowing ...sorry for your time.

Help save my poor eggs...you wouldn't just let them die would you?

the One other factor supporting this and dare to ask but wouldn't a newborn lava snake be cooked alive if born into lava.(and yes I am implying that I belive they are not born with such armor of extreme heat negation but rather that the grow it.)
However they may give live birth but I suggest that they may give birth before maximum size,as I thought some reptiles do.
Hello! This mod is wonderful! It adds so many animals to experiment with! but they spawn very rare in the overworld so... how can I make they spawn more? to have many many animals spawned!
Mecheon basically got technical about what I was being basic on.
Lava snakes, in this concept, would have to have internals that could simply withstand that kind of heat. No amount of growable armour is going to insulate you from endless radiating heat. You'd be cooked alive. Whatever they're made of, internally, would have to be completely impervious to the lava's temperature, and then so would their young. I'd assume, therefore, that their young would have no problems taking to the lava. It'd be like water to them.
Also, DepressedWalrus... Are you... Implying a praying mantis could be used like scissors?.... I just... I don't even.
Karasu6: Don't worry about spawning. Daveyx0 is redoing the spawning system for the mod. Next release should fix all our spawn problems (barring a few bugs of course - not expecting you to be perfect, Davey!)

Many reptiles just simply keep growing for their entire lives, a key example being crocodiles. As for reproduction before maximum size... Yeah, most creatures do that.

Also I was wondering some things... are their mobs that we can ditch? Personally I don't mind. It just feels like some mobs don't belong in this mod. If not, I'm thinking of adding a way of optionally adding mobs to the mod in a differrent section on the OP. The code really is a mess, so bare with me. :S
I'm pretty cool with most of them. The only ones I'd say would be on a hypothetical chopping block for removal would be ones in other mods, but, well, generally your one has the better versions of them
Heck, the only one I can really think of I wouldn't mind losing is the butterfly, and that's only because of the butterfly mod existing as a separate thing
(I will fight anyone who says vultures should be removed, just FYI)

Personally, I think Santa and the Christmas Tree could be removed. They don't really fit in with the rest of the mobs, IMO. Other than that, I don't see any reason to remove mobs.
Daveyx0, I personally love all the mobs and don't think you should remove any of them. I do wish there was a way to tame all the mobs so they don't despawn. I've built a zoo around your mod and mo creatures and would love to add more exhibits. Also I'm sure you hear it all the time, but have you considered adding monkeys and penguins? I really think they are needed for the jungle and snow biomes. Thank you and keep up the great work!

Hello!
Just dropping in to say that AtmosMobs is now in The Minecraft Ascension Modpack (TMAM) for Minecraft 1.4.7. The modpack uses a lot of tech mods and overall purpose is to automate systems. If you want to check it out, it's forum page is found here! Thanks to Daveyx0 for this wonderful Mod!

Speculative biology is fun. Completely unscientific, but oh god I can just go off about it for hours on end
