This idea has only been brought up twice before, and with the growing number of creative servers I feel it is a worthy idea.
Here it is:
The modification would allow the user to import a schematic file to the client, and it would appear before the user semi-transparent, inside a multiplayer world. The user could then go and fill in the transparent blocks with real blocks. Currently builders often must go back and forth between screenshots and single-player worlds to figure out where a certain block must go, a grueling and easily fallible task. This may be particularly helpful to redstone builders who build something in single-player, but shudder at the task of rebuilding the whole thing again on multiplayer. Also good for pixel-art.
I would try to make this mod, but being a beginner it seems far more complicated than adding a block or two to the game. I have ideas about how the transparency works, but dealing with schematics and multiplayer caches etc. seems like something for the pros. Need a challenge, modders? Here it is. And you'll be loved for doing it!
With world edit you can import schematics but user side would be hard because the server owner has to have them in a schematic folder for it to work...

You misunderstand. It would import to the client, and client only. It would be nonexistent to anyone else, until its ghostly shape is filled by hand using real blocks. No server modification here.
Oh how I would love to have this mod. I've looked for this mod for months. All I have also been able to find are those two forum posts as well
I'd love to be able to build some of my SP stuff on the SMP I'm currently playing on without "winging it" or tabbing back and forth every 10 seconds.
