Hey. Im just wondering what you do when you find an abandoned mineshaft, dungeon or on multiplayer an abandoned structure. I got the thought when I started my new 1.2.3 world. I spawned in a snowy biome and was hard pressed for wood and torches. I found an abandoned mineshaft that are abundant with wood (Especialy if it spawn over a ravine, lots of wooden paths generated :)) and I was walking through it looking for a chest of items (Do they still spawn in mineshafts? Iv got feeling I read somewhere they dont...) I had used my pickaxe and needed some wood for a replacement. Soooooooo I scavenged all I could from the shaft and got out. It saved my life but sorta messed up the mines look... So, are you the sorta person that loots all they can or leaves the place looking pretty?

Get the wood and melon seeds and that is about it for mine shafts.

Honestly for once it'd be nice to find old ruins on the surface as well as old mine shaft entrances on the surface as well. I'd love to see something old and forlorn sticking out the side of a mountain or the ground. Ravines aren't bad for once in a blue moon finds from the surface but I want something that helps accentuate the landscape more.

Example: One seed from a while back had an old fortress on the bottom of an ocean where you could actually look inside from the water and see things. This was a few versions back but it was a really cool find.

I'm living in the most expansive mineshaft ever, so I clear that shit out.  I make all hallways 3x3, break down 1-2 thick walls usually creating large open areas, I destroy all cobwebs and wooden supports.. block off all lava and light all my hallways up on the lefthand side.  I also block off any dead ends.

I'm far from exploring all of my mineshafts too :(

I search the mineshaft everywhere for diamonds (ore and chest) and for the super awesome...    ...    ...melon seeds!! (How did the miners get the melon seeds if they don't occur naturally?)

In the event that I get lost, I dig up to the surface and use my compass to get to home (I mostly build my house at spawn (or at least in render distance), if not, I make some signposts when I go further away from the spawn or at least a note with coordinates on it.)

They're nice places to move into :D it's best when you find one which cuts into a few dungeons and one of them thingies with the end portals.

it took me over three months to clear out the last abandoned mine shaft that i found.  you do need to use some sort of system to mark where you have been for in some cases you can end up going in circles.   i usually use cobble stone since it is not commonly found in the shafts to mark where i have been.

I go through them, look for chests, harvest the wood and fences, and harvest the cobwebs.

Mine shafts also tend to expose a lot of ores as well, so I mine all those.
It's sort of painful when you fall into a lava-filled ravine though.

Ohh that sucks...
But its worse when you have a few diamonds in your inventory, and say you fell but died in water, and the end of the water went into lava..Also sucks. Or just plain falling in lava.

That's the only way to find them is in mindshafts.
Otherwise you didn't.
And that has always been the way to find melons, every since they were created in minecraft.

1. Explore
2. Find melon seeds and maybe diamonds
3. Get lost
4. Find the way back
5. Repeat

Thats it until I think that I've explored all of it

If I find one, I mine all resources, and explore it. I mark where I've been by using redstone torches, as on SMP redstone is almost useless.

Seconded. I scavange chests and mine ore but don't really touch wood or anything unless I'm running low. I just block off the wooden gates as i explore so I know i've hit everything.

I take the rails, destory spider webs for string, loot chests, but leave the wood and beams for that feel when I'm mining. :)

I beg your pardon?  I'm sorry, I love working redstone stuff on servers to confuse my friends.  :3

I generally explore them like I would a cave, and if I find multiple cave spider spawners near, I make an xp farm.
